Veneration smothers growth in an artist like thirst and grey skies wither the fresh budding shoot.

I could strut around a stage;
Throw the odd aerobic
Shape and call it
Dance.

I could vomit on a page;
Shake it off and let
It dry and say,
I paint.

I wouldn’t argue with the fans:
I would accept that I was
Great and if a lone cry
Echoed out above
the crowd to say
But wait! It’s
Not even
Art!

This poem is dedicated to all the true, talented critics out there: in the hope that some of them will be brave enough to start regular columns covering the different art forms.

Hahaha, lovely. Your use of imagery is grand. Wonderful word choice! Thank you for taking the time to share this with our community. :)

Ty, sadly it will do little to improve the quality of Steemit poetry because without proper critique, the people who need to take note: either won't read it, or won't recognise that I was talking about them!
At least I got it off my chest ;)

I try to remember that the ancient cultures rarely had a word for "art." Art is life to me, and anything we create is another piece of art. I also try to remember that it was made because the person wanted to and enjoyed the process if not the end product. There is no such thing as bad art, except art that has not been attempted. Just my personal opinion of course. :D

Toddlers enjoy the process of picking their nose but if they wipe it on your favourite tee you aren't going to call it art, you're going to wash it.
Surely there has to be some point where you stop praising and you say, "hmm nice attempt but I think you could do better? Otherwise why is there even such thing as an art class or a dance class? If there's no bad then there's no good, so how do you decide what to vote for?
Of course people should feel free to create whatever they like and if they don't want criticism because they aren't interested in growth, then they should save their creations for close family and friends and people who have no opinion-like the ancients did.
Steemit artists are anti-criticism because pocket trumps development. There are few here would cut off their own ear.

I don't wear t-shirts, I wear a robe that I wash only when it gets ridiculously dirty - I would laugh and wipe off the booger.

Good and bad are polarities of the same idea, such as hot and cold are polarities of temperature. Both are completely subjective. How can I tell you that what you think is good, is actually bad? I can absolutely give my opinion on how I feel about it, and what I enjoyed and what I feel could have been done better. I cannot convince you that you are wrong and that I am right, both these are again subjective polarities of the good-bad dichotomy.

I praise every attempt, but that does not mean that I do not express my opinion for growth as well. I pride myself on being able to receive criticism and grow from it, so I do the same but do my best to make it constructive. If an individual cannot take my words, I shrug them off and keep moving forward.

I have absolutely seen what I would consider not great art get high payouts, but I cannot say anything other than its not of my liking because obviously there are others who would disagree with me and to argue is futile.

I do my art forms for the appreciation, not for the payment - the payment is wonderful and would be great if I could sustain off of such, but interaction is enough for me to know that my art was well received or what I am able to do to refine my skills.

I think that we are more or less on the same page, my robe wearing friend, except that I think that there is objectivity in human constructs, i.e thees iz badd spelink.
My observation is that there is a distinct lack of constructive criticism for Steemit art, particularly for high paying posts, because such criticism is dismissed as "sour grapes", no matter how positive it is and this attitude leads to a sycophantic environment that is stagnating for art.
Have you ever tried leaving constructive criticism on a high paying post? I actually did the first week that I was here: simply pointing out that the sonnet didn't quite fit the rules of a sonnet. I would be pleasantly surprised if any of my poetry ever received an up vote from that dolphin writer, but I won't hold my breath.
I actually believe that you would be different and welcome criticism if you were a dolphin writer, but you would be one of the few.

EXCELLENT SOUND AND RHYTHM - GREAT TITLE - GREAT IMAGERY - I NOW NAME THEE QUEEN POET OF STEEMIT - NO VENERATION REQUIRED!! FINALLY A POET HAS LANDED ON STEEMIT! MORE!!

Are you shitting me? Seriously? You liked it that much? It was the vomit wasn't it?

That last paragraph REALLY punches you in the throat! - why do we care for bad art here?? - excellent theme! Time to leave Steemit ASAP! After reading this poem I shall leave later today!!

Don't go! I need way more fans before I lose my head. If anything the pressure to impress again would make me even more self-critical.
It really means something amazing though when someone critical likes your work.

If all the art here is 99.9% wrong - then my opinion is meaningless here. Pearls before swine ;)x

Oh man, I can so see this relating to steemit right now. Your words just put a great visual into my mind. Thanks cathi :D

Thank you. You castration post was a real eye opener. The part about the nail made me think of Reek from GOT. When I watched it I thought it was ridiculous because when he healed he wouldn't be able to pee. Now I realise that he had torture after care ;)

Oh shoot, I hadn't even thought about Reek. I guess they would have done something like that.

GoT - such a great show

MAN! THIS POST IS SO POWERFUL I AM LEAVING STEEMIT TONIGHT!

Neo: But if you already know, how can I make a choice?

The Oracle: Because you didn't come here to make the choice, you've already made it. You're here to try to understand why you made it. I thought you'd have figured that out by now.

(said twice for effect!)

This is brilliant:)
