Vacant

A chenille bed spread,
wadded like paper mache,
clings to a rotted foam mattress.

Linoleum cracks underfoot.

A forty watt bulb hangs overhead,
an old crystal sun
lifeless and spent.

Empty bottles sober
and try to explain what went wrong.

Still no one believes
there is life after death
but three names
remain on the wall.

You imagine the beginning
and wonder who lived here.

A pocketful of rodents
scurry about, leave cryptic clues
in their trails of urine.

You foresee their cries
when winter winds
rattle tin windows.

Then as you leave
the door slams behind you.

I really loved this. I especially liked the lines about the old crystal sun and empty bottles sober. Great write.

Thanks, I had fun writing it.

Thanks glad you enjoyed it.

Ooohhh I could really picture the scene. This was nicely done. I really like the emphasis on the visuals. It really painted a detailed picture. Takes the reader to a decrepit domicile filled with wonder and history. Or, as others might see it, not a very inviting place to live in. It's all about perspective, and you straddled the line between the two shifting narratives.

I find old dwellings interesting, as you say history, it's someone's life. To this day I love exploring abandoned buildings, seeing what was left behind. So glad you enjoyed it

When you say it like that, makes me think of archaeology. In a way, it kind of is, isn't it?

For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can't readily accept the God formula, the big answers don't remain stone-written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command nor faith a dictum. I am my own god. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.

Good read, not everyone will see the metaphor. I hope it didn't sound preachy. When I write a poem with a religious undertone it is always meant to cause thinking and never to demand. After all everyone figures these things our for themselves. And yes, let's laugh, have a few beers and try to end war!

So amazing poem my friend! Thanks a lot to share! (;

You are entirely welcome, come back anytime.
