We're Only Star Stuff in the End
We’re Only Star Stuff in the End
This week I decided to move out of my comfort zone and take a stab at poetry.
We’re Only Star Stuff in the End
As a child, your heroes vary
Curly, Moe, and Shemp and Larry
Snatching up a funny book
Immerse yourself in Captain Hook
And later when your Mom gives hugs
You close the day with Bunny Bugs
And when you finally quit cartoons
And read a tome of Daniel Boone
Perhaps again you rise at dawn
And conquer lands with Genghis Khan
And bounce along in wooden wagons
On dusty roads with Sam and Baggins
Or if you find yourself in luck
Raft a river with Tom and Huck
Curious minds explore the world
Watching Cosmos comfortably curled
As Doctor Sagan often said
We'll be just Star Stuff when we’re dead
Life moved on and in a whirl
I stumbled on and found a girl
When we stopped and went to rest
She cradled me upon her breasts
In the quiet of that room
I planted seed into her womb
And from that seed, a child was born
I lifted high to greet the morn
With his feeble cries of strife
Informed us of another life
In his blood the guarantee
That hinted of eternity
And when new life no longer mattered
Strumming tunes by Nelson and Haggard
Haunting words composed so deftly
Told of tragic Pancho and Lefty
I learned that Silence has a Sound
When Paul and Art were still around
Inspiring sounds that were so curious
I trained my fingers to Asturias
But on my deathbed, I will see
Behind me lies eternity
Before me hasn’t yet occurred
And what comes next is only blurred
If, I have not lived my life
Regret will cut me like a knife
Only what is in the past
Burned on my soul will surely last
When my consciousness does fade
To mingle with the other shades
Who will be my heroes then
Only ghosts of greater men?
And in that distant time and place
When mankind's gone without a trace
What heroes will the gods dare send?
We’re Only Star Stuff in the End!
CARRY ON!
Not a bad stab at poetry, @beekerst! The poem reflects what most of our generation has experienced and hints at what we hope for our future generations. I know what I have experienced through my lifetime, what wonders will my grandchildren and great-grandchildren experience?
Thanks, @cecicastor, I had fun writing it. That bunch in the Writers' Block are encouraging! I have an idea for another... I can't seem to quit going back and editing this one! Next time I'll sit on it a few days until I have it perfect or mucked up too bad to publish!
How's the situation on supplies in Nicaragua? I haven't had a chance to read your latest post on the situation.
I will be posting another soon. We are sitting here waiting for the other shoe to drop and move into a full-blown revolution. I keep praying for a peaceful resolution but so far it doesn't look promising.
I'm for a peaceful resolution!
There are a lot of middle-aged men with young families who have no desire to be brought into a useless war. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail.
Makes me think of what that say at funerals ...from ashes to ashes, dust to dust (star stuff to star stuff) what comes in between is all we really know. Leaving a legacy (children & grandchildren to be exact is what makes us live on) Deep poem I guess.... could be taken several ways depending on how you read it @beekerst. Great writing!
I always value your honest opinions @sunnyside! I'm glad you think it's "deep". I tried to hit a buried nerve that lingers in the back of people's minds.
So you really are a poet! Nice job. Thanks for posting.
It's better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you'll drift in that direction.
I have read this at least 10 times and cannot figure out what relevance it has to the post??? Enlighten me!
Ah, nevermind, I reviewed your comments on other's post and see you are only a spammer. Don't comment on my work again unless you read it. I will flag you in a heartbeat. In fact, you've earned it now! BAM!
