My first Post.. Writing Contest ... Same First Words

Three sides of dissociation are channeling.

Three hospitals deep into November and I don't know where October has gone. Three words: hike into hills. Three miles into a small valley, until the path narrows so much the grasses rub against my legs. Three times, the edge of the valley meets the side of the hill. Three hours pass, and I reach the top . Three things I wonder in the hospital: I wonder how much blood has been on that floor, or if it's bad my jacket has touched the table because of the germs, or I wonder if the tubes are out of Josh. Three halls meet each other as a nice woman pushes me on the bed that is now a cart. Three spots of something unknown leer at me from the bathroom floor, where I wobble with my bare feet.

Three rooms ago, the doctor forgot the word "pancreas." Three nurses had to try to help as I joked through waves of writhing nausea, "Oh wait a minute, doctor...are you sure I should let you help me?" Three of us are ill, my friends are in other hospitals, hundreds of miles away, and I can't help but wonder if our elven magic is under attack.

Three days later, Josh calls, and says he is out of his coma, and he jokes like things are normal. Three of us still the hospital, and they have taken Mark's phone. Three-degrees-below-freezing wind rattles the fence, but I can't hear it through the glass.

Three florescent lights buzz the white walls and the top of the hill and turning hallways always lost: I don't allow myself to keep track.
