Podcasts - a double edged sword. Several years ago, when I've discovered them, I was blown away. New information daily, during shopping or commuting. Isn't that awesome? I don't have to read all those loong articles anymore and can spare some time like this. Well, over years, so many cool podcast emerged, my lack of time problem is back. It's hard to listen to them all...If you have the same problem, I'm here for you :)

In these series of posts, I'll be summing up the latest interesting podcasts I've listened to, so you can save up some time for another ones.

Joe Rogan Experience - Firas Zahabi

Head coach of one of the best MMA gyms in the world and coach of GSP came to Rogan's and discussed (as expected) lot of martial arts related stuff. They also went a bit into science and philosophy but I'm not covering that part since I was listening to it while shopping and the discussion went too deep and too theoretical for my half-concentration in the shopping mall :D

Here are the points I've found interesting:

  • Thinks you should never feel sore after the training. Rather than doing 50 pullups and waiting 2 days to recover, he suggests doing 20 every day. That eventually makes up for volume of the training in the long run and after several months, doing less but consistent makes up for more experience
  • Same applies to his martial arts training - he rarely spars hard, because he knows he'll be sore the next day
  • During BJJ practice, he rolls mostly with blue and purple belts and after 5-6 rounds with them, he does max 2 rounds with some of his top guys
  • Because of this approach, he feels better now at 38 than he used to when he was 25 although he still trains 2 times a day
  • Perfect training camp - he thinks there's an optimal amount to optimize training. If it's too easy, individual won't be interested. If it's too hard, his fighter won't be enthusiastic to get into another training camp again. Therefore he doesn't agree on grueling training camps
  • He thinks MMA fighters should fight max 2 times a year, because it takes 6 months to learn a technique and your body to "accept it"
  • He thinks heavy lifting is overrated and rather does a lot of plyometrics. E.g rather than doing heavy 90% RM squatt, he does 5 explosive ones with 70% of RM.
  • He says if you'd put weight under your feet and do the slow heavy squatt vs explosive medium squatt, weight shows your legs generate more power in the explosive one with less weight on the back + it doesn't tax joints (I have to try this out, if the weight really shows more!)
  • He always gains weight during Ramadan, because he eats processed food after the sunset (btw this is supercommon among my muslim friends and they all agree it's actually very counterproductive to what Ramadan should be about - cleaning the body)
  • He thinks stretching is important but does rather a mobility work then pure stretching
  • He also disagrees on conditioning-like warmups before the BJJ class. Any work weakens your stabilizers and if you roll in this weakened state, you-re more injury prone.
  • High jumps vs. box jumps - train the same muscles, but box jumps save your knees from heavy landing
  • He reads a looot of philosophy books and want to write some in the future (this was apparent in their 40 minutes tangine about science, randomness, faith etc. but I was shopping summer t-shirts and discussion went too deep for me to understand Faras with just half-concentrating)
