Famous Scientific Illusions - the Moon's Rotation

in #physics7 years ago

In the February 1919 edition of the Electrical Experimenter, Nikola Tesla published an article by this name. In it he showed that the Moon does not rotate around its axis, as I will prove below in my own words. Strangely enough modern science is still not accepting this simple fact even after almost 100 years, as you can read for example in wikipedia.
People are still believing that the Moon rotates around its axis in such a way that the same side faces the Earth at all times, while the fact that we always see the same side is proof that there is no such rotation.

PROOF
Take a piece of paper and draw a small circle in the middle representing the Earth. Next draw a second small circle somewhere outside of the first, representing the Moon. Mark the side of the Moon that is facing the Earth with a small "x".
Now, put a pin through the centre of the Earth (the one that you've drawn ;) ) and rotate the paper around it. You will now see the Moon rotating around the Earth with the small "x" always facing the Earth. How could it be any different?
Now, take note that there is only 1 (one) rotation happening here, around the pin -which is our axis of rotation- that goes through the middle of the Earth. The Moon can not rotate around its axis as that would tear the paper.
In short, the Moon does rotate, but not around its axis. It rotates around the Earth.
Again, when the paper rotates around the pin that is the only rotation that takes place.

One more that I posted on LinkedIn

Moon3.jpg

This boy is desperately trying to impress his sister by turning the carousel as fast as he can. To avoid motion sickness his sister cleverly keeps her eyes focussed on the centre wheel of the carousel. Now suppose this wheel was the Earth, then we can easily verify that her face is constantly facing the Earth exactly as the Moon does.
But is her head spinning around its axis, in an exorcist kind of way? No, not at all. Her head is not rotating.
Can there be any discussion about this obvious fact?

Now as trivial as this is -we shouldn't even be discussing this- can someone answer me why this most obvious fact is still misinterpreted today? Even if the correct solution was presented almost 100 years ago?

Amazing! isn't it?

Sort:

I can't believe this isn't common knowledge! I thought it was obviously gravitationally locked like the moon of Pluto. Although Charon is also in a geosynchronous orbit causing it to not only show the same face, but also remain in the same spot in the sky all the time!

Incredible, isn't it?

Right? Wow, that's awesome to think about!

Awesome post! Thank you for sharing!

very great information i love reading it

I'm so thankful that you created this post. About a year ago I was looking up at the moon and wondered how the idea of the moon rotating on it's axis ever got around (pun intended). We're always looking at the same side, so it's pretty obvious it doesn't rotate like that. Haha it is kind of ridiculous but it's amazing, yes.

I am very pleased to hear that!

Thanks

Would like to introduce the new physics-trail.
If you wish to be followed by physics-trail, just leave a comment in that article. Thanks!

I suggest not digging on topics not pertinent to Tesla research. While I endorse the recreation of Wardenclyffe and the underpinning theory, as an astronomy enthusiast and owner of a big telescope I totally disagree on this post, because it sports an absolutely disgraceful position about the moon rotation, and I'm not even arguing about the "PROOF" presented here. Please... things like this can destroy credibility on the other things you are researching, Ernst!
