HILDE, THE ASSASSIN | A b&w series i made in an abandoned military base

in #photomatic7 years ago (edited)

Today i reedited some photos i made with a good friend of mine, Hilde. I wanted something kinda weird for her because, well, she is a weird person (in a good way, of course).

The Shoot

We established that the theme for this shoot will be "Assassin", so the photos bellow are made in that idea.

I taught of a locations for some days, and i remembered that there was an abandoned military base near my hometown, in Floresti, Romania. So we went there to take some photos for this photo-session.

At first i wanted some portraits in one of the buildings that had a large hall downstairs and a collapsed roof upstairs. The light in this floors was so good for the mood i wanted. Especially the light where the collapsed roof was, as you can see in the photo above.

After that, we went to another building that had smaller rooms. There we found locations where the natural light entered thru the holes in the roof or thru the broken windows. I felt this was the perfect spot for the "Assassin" theme.

Initially i wanted just photos with her, but as we were 4-5 persons at this shoot, i used another friend of mine to play "the victim". So the shot above emerged. Yes, it is kinda freaky, but personally i just love it.

The gear

For this shoot i used my Nikon D300s (as usual). This camera, even tho it is and old DSLR from Nikon, is a beast of a machine. I usually take it with me when i have shoots in abandoned places because if i fall or if there is too much dust, the loss is not that bad (LOL).

As for lenses, i used my trusty 50mm 1.8 from Nikon, wich is a very good all-around lens. Highly recommend it. Also, for the last shot i used my Nikon 18-105mm wich is a nice one for wider photos.

I don't have great gear, but i try to make the most i can with what i have. For paid photo-shoots and events i usually rent cameras from a local store. Then i use the Nikon D810 and the 50mm 1.4 and 24-80 2.8 lenses. This was clearly not the case here :)

The team

Usually when i make this type of session, i go there with 4-5 people. Some of them scout for good lighting rooms, and some of them help me with the positioning of the model.

Even tho i shoot only with natural light, it is very important to have a multi-faced lighting reflector. I usually use it to light up darker rooms or even for the portraits if the light is too dim.

It's much more fun to go with a team, we have so much fun and we really like to discover new locations.

Final note

I had a great time with my friends and the photos turned so nice in my opinion. Hopefully you will find them good. If you have any critique, i embrace it and i really recommend you to comment below. Thanks!
