Africa! What can I say? It's a stunning place to visit.
I took these photos in Ngorogoro Crater, Tanzania. This lion and his mate were off to the pub after a hard days hunting. They walked past all the 4 wheel drives parked up to take photos without batting an eyelid or deviating from their course. They could taste the beer.
Out in front of them was a young zebra, showing off his poses for the cameras and enjoying his time in the spotlight. He didn't see the lions.
But they saw him. And paid no attention. They had finished for the day and were off to the pub. They didn’t care about zebras. So they kept on marching and the zebra kept on posing.
But it’s one of those things, if you put food in front of a lion, even if he’s not hungry, he’ll have a go. By now he was only about fifty meters away from the zebra. So he looked back at his mate, shrugged his shoulders, and broke into a trot, preparing to charge at the zebra.
The sound of a thousand camera shutters all going off at once filled the air. It didn’t deter the lion, but it did make the zebra turn around to see what the fuss was about.
Some other zebra stealing his spotlight perhaps? Nope. It was an apex predator dialled in and coming straight towards him. You could see the thought process as it played across the young zebra’s face.
“Shit! Where did he come from? Lion!!” He spun and ran full seed towards his heard screaming for his mother.
The lion dropped back to a walk, looked back at his mate, who had not even broken his stride, and shrugged his shoulders, as if to say, “Zebras huh?” They carried on into the evening, focused on a nice cold Heineken.
It was a really good day out. If you get the chance to go there, grab it with both hands.
Oh, and remember to take a beer for the lions.
