Karoo Donkey Sanctuary - Saints at work

Earlier this year I wrote an article around the mistreatment of donkeys in South Africa and how they are being slaughtered inhumanely for their pelts A Donkeys Tale..or is that Hide. It was indeed a depressing story but I did promise a bright side to this sorry state of affairs.

A Cape Town business man, Jonno, who happens to own a small holding in Prince Albert, Western Cape heard of the plight of these donkeys which were being auctioned off to be slaughtered for their hides and decided that enough was enough.

Malnourished donkeys were the norm amongst those rescued, many of them pregnant

And so the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary came into being. Not a one man show at all, with many equestrian and veterinary persons volunteer their time, skills and money to the project. What started as a rescue of three or four mistreated donkeys has grown into a full blown registered nonprofit organization providing sanctuary for hundreds of donkeys, horses and other odd animals…..like the one below

Now my good lady @fempower has supported this charity for a while up until that time. When this number of donkeys and horses were rescued there was desperate call for donations as the sanctuary was not geared for such a large influx.

So we decided to do a fundraising drive (my job as usual) . One of my passions is thoroughbred horseracing so what better place to start than with the racing community who have never let me down in the past when called upon to assist. Over the next few weeks we received memorabilia to auction on Africanbettingclan from Bryanston Auctioneers as well as other racing memorabilia, and some stunning wine gifts sets from Arendsig Wines. We also ran competitions and generally just asked for donations where possible.

At the end of February we drove through to the sanctuary to meet Jonno and the donkeys and to hand over the funds raised to support KDS

After spending some time visiting the donkeys we did the symbolic handover of the funds, as the ETF had already been done. Note @themagus's zooty shirt
