What makes you a hip hop scholar?
It’s the fact that you’re hip hop all the time.
And that means you’re gonna have to lose your job, which means you have a conflicted relationship with your family. You find sometimes when you get up, your loved ones get up with you. But while you pretended, they pretended, while you didn’t know, neither did they. But the moment you said, "I know!" , you’ll be surprised to see them say, "Now I know too!".
Sometimes we judge too quickly: "My father will never accept it, my mother will never understand". You’d be surprised what your family understands and doesn’t understand. But you have to have courage, as you may lose your family to that lack of understanding. You might lose that job, you might end up in prison.
What if an angel came and you were praying, "I want to be the best DJ in the world"? You’re praying and the angel appears.
-BUM! "Here I am, what’s your problem?".
-"Aaaah, ah... I want to be the best DJ in the world".
And the angel says:
-"Look, you’ll be the best DJ, but I want to show you how you’ll get there. First, when you leave your house, you’ll be shot in the leg".
-"¿WHAT?".
-"But you won’t die, they’ll just shoot you in the leg, just once".
-"¿What do you mean?".
-"You will not die, you just have to feel the PAIN of the shot in the leg. You will heal and when you leave again you will be hit by a car. You won’t die either, but the guy who will will be your producer. He will feel so guilty that he will record you as the best record and so you will become a DJ".
Now you wake up from the dream and it’s up to you to make a decision. If you knew you were gonna get shot in the leg, and you were gonna get hit by a car, but that’s what’s gonna make you a successful DJ, ¿You’d still do it?. You’ll get shot, you know, you’ll get out and run over, and you know it, too, but in the end you’ll get what you want. ¿You’d still go for that?. This is what you have to ask yourself, the answer will not be right or wrong, this is not a question of morality. It is a question of character. ¿Who are you?. "Well, okay, I’ll get shot but the car won’t" or "Well, pass the car but the shot doesn’t", ¿Who are you?.
The reason I’m talking about this is because this is why most people don’t get it. They don’t get it because they know they’ll shoot him in the leg and get hit by a car. That’s why they say: "I can’t visualize my success. That won’t happen to me. That’s why I’m staying here with Mr. Charlie. Because I don’t want that shot, I don’t want to get run over. Okay, Mr Charlie, what do you want?". This is how we live every day.
The moment you say: "I’m gonna get rich or die trying". Once you take that attitude, you become successful, since you say it. If you fear pain and suffering you will never be anything. Many people today, 99% don’t want pain or suffering in their lives. So they don’t get what comes after pain and suffering.
We all look at a celebrity and say: "She's a star". But before you say you want to be like them, look at their biographies. I guarantee that after reading them you don’t want to go through that to get there.
Read any of his stories: "First of all, my mother died. We were very close". ¿Are you ready for that ? ¿To sacrifice your mother for your career?. The angel comes and says to you:
-"Mom has to die for you".
You go to the room and you think:
-"¿Mom?"
-"Yeah, for you to be the best DJ, your mom has to die. And your mother is the only one here with you, the only one who supports you... but that’s it, she has to go for you".
¿Would do it? Most people say: "No way. I’m staying here but Mom’s staying with me". That’s why people don’t get it. If you’re ready for your mother to go, for your children to go, you can be a celebrity. If you are prepared to quit that job, or whatever you consider authority and proclaim YOURSELF authority. If you are ready to believe in yourself. The bravery that this implies is that you may have everything you have to get it.
