Winter On Mars - A Love Dedication To My 'Burned Island' 🌋

in #photography6 years ago

If humanity doesn't land on Mars in my lifetime, I would be very disappointed. - Elon Musk

I do have an alternative Mars mission for you, Elon.

You'll soon die of boredom on that burned island. Is there anything but rocks? they told me.

We are only blind as we want to be, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You gonna either love or hate the isle of Lanzarote, there isn't much in between. I've been falling for it from day one.

Probably this place mirrors my way of living like no other one on earth: authentic, imperturbable, unique.

Winds blow strong over that volcanic marsscape and one feels tiny and unimportant walking over it - as it has to be.

It's winter on Mars, and I kindly invite you to fall in love with it. 🍂

There's life beneath the surface.

Lanzarote is the northernmost and easternmost island of the Canary Islands and has a volcanic origin.

The burned island - as it is often called - emerged about 15 million years ago. It's as product of the breakup of the African and the American continental plates and was born through fiery eruptions.

It's history is omnipresent.

The island has solidified lava streams as well as extravagant rock formations, and at some points of the Timanfaya National Park the Earth's surface is still so hot that you can bake some eggs on it.

Yet, Lanzarote is much more than just rocks.

It's a wonderful melting point of Ocean & Earth as this video from one of my surf buddies demonstrates.

Otherworldly.

That's what the isle of Lanzarote is all about.

The landscape has a stark and otherworldly appearance, with the occasional bucolic, palm-filled valley juxtaposed with surreal, crinkly black lava fields. - lonelyplanet.com

It's hard to describe the island from just one single standpoint.

In order to appreciate its diversity, you may want to browse though the content submitted by @paxsurf, a surfer, skater and photographer from Lanzarote.

Taste of Mars.

Besides the impressive natural heritage, Lanzarote is well known for its outstanding gastronomy, offering a wide range of excellent restaurants.

Whenever some friends from the other islands come over, I pretty much enjoy to invite them for an unforgettable dinner.

You may enjoy being served a plate of freshly caught fish, seafood or barbecue while enjoying the stunning views on the dark blue Ocean and recognize that...

One doesn't need to go on a mission to Mars in order to live something otherwordly.

Make sure that the isle of Lanzarote is on your bucket list, as long as we can't travel to the other Mars..

You know: life is short, make it count.

Much love,
Marly -

I really don't care what the landscape of the area I live in is like, as long as there is an ocean near by. I don't see this happening on Mars, so that's not for me. lol

Haha, you're spot on! That's a great reason to stay on Earth actually :-)

Hey you're on Mars, I'm on earth :P

We should coordinate better so we meet up some day haha

Ha! I was actually hoping to find you out there, since I heard that extraterrestrial life is totally your métier :-)) However, let's improve the coordination - I am all in for a meetup! :-)
Are you going to Steemfest btw?

It seriously does look like Mars

Yeah... but fortunately we also have... water! :-)

Very interesting, it looks as if there is no residential area at all. I seriously thought it could be Mars for a few seconds lol.

Is the volcano still active? I heard it can lead to landslides and megatsunamis if it actually erupts at some point.

Nevertheless, I imagine the seafood would be phenomenal.

Greetings from Cape Town :)

Hehe, there are residential areas.. we do have ~150,000 people living on the island, and they don't live in caves :-))

Currently there is only one active volcano called Timanfaya. As I mentioned in the post, the Earth's surface close to the volcano is still very hot. There are theories that say if one of the volcanos on the isle of La Palma (another of the 7 Canary Islands) erupted, it may lead to breaking the island into two pieces, while that may cause a megatsunami starting to move towards Northamerica. We - you and me - wouldn't witness that during our lifetimes anyways.

Just checked out your blog and liked it so much that I decided to follow you :-)
Greetings back from Mars, hehe

Beautifully described Surfermarly!
As a lifelong surfer I have always wanted to visit the Canaries.
I loved your friends surf vid too - wow ... beautiful waves!

upvoted and resteemed :D

Thanks a lot for your support, @icedrum!!
Canaries are actually ideal for any type of watersports, so I understand the motion :-)

Looks very interesting! Is there any residential areas and any markets to buy some stuff if need? thanks!

Hahaha, we are ~150,000 residents on the island, and we don't live in caves :-D There are a lot of cities on the island, including a regular infrastructure of residential areas, shops, restaurents, hospitals, etc. Canary Islands belong to Spain (EU), even though we're close to Africa :-)

Beautiful!!! Thanks for the info.. I was thinking of the "burned island" alone. hehe!

Your adventure spirit is quite unique one. My intuition says you have been to more exotic trips before and alongwith Surfing this is not the only passion you have.

Wow, what a stark landscape...

And those tubes in the vid look awesome, but they look like they're breaking in awfully shallow water and over volcanic reef... The bloody feet were a clue?

Beautifully terrifying...

😄😇😄
