Hiking Adventure to Milford Sound -New Zealand

Hi everyone and welcome to my hiking adventure to Milford Sound in New Zealand.

Milford Sound is a magical Fjord in one of the wettest places in the whole world! It rains here about 180 days of the year and is therefore as you can imagine, extremely lush with plant life.

The most impressive face of the fjord is called Mitre Peak.

It was the most breathtaking scenery and I enjoyed a really magical time there.
There was that amazing feeling you get when you know a place has barely changed for hundreds maybe thousands of years.

The Māori hunted and fished here a thousand years ago. What an extraordinary thought.
The Māori call this place Piopiotahi. The piopio was a bird - now extinct. I can imagine there was much more wildlife here a thousand years ago.

So much water falls here that the water of the fjord has the interesting quality that the top layer is fresh water from the rainfall , while the deepest depths of the fjord are saltwater from the Tasman Sea. The waters here are home to dolphins, penguins and seals.

Below the surface are thriving coral colonies of black, red and bubblegum corals of staggering beauty.
The surrounding beech forests are incredibly beautiful. There are many different walks you can take to explore this amazing area.

There are even cruises available around the fjord if you like organised tourism.
