Walking down a Forest Service Road - Ultraviolet and Infrared Photography

in #photography5 years ago

During the summer, walking down these roads is not too bad. With the cover by the trees its mostly the humidity and bugs I need to worry about. The Ultraviolet sky was peaking through the center cut of the road where no trees were growing.

Looking off to one side of the Forest Service Road it was woods for as far as I could see. Which was only about thirty feet. Dense woods around here make me want to stick to roads, trails and rivers for orientation.

The trees were quite happy, reflecting infrared light making their leaves appear bright white.

rw-1190529.jpg

Light coming through the upper tree canopy still reaches the lower plants and they can be shown reflecting infrared light as well.

Though some trees have fallen, this one looks like it broke in half. Bugs and critters probably live inside of it now.

Its interesting to see the trees lean toward the opening in the sky. This Forest Service Road is probably decades old. So trees have grown towards the opening leaning over.

Large stone formations were all around this State Park. We noticed some walking down the Forest Service road and along the trail on the sides of the path.

Clovers, ferns and some other plants growing right above the large stone boulder. Some lichen can be seen as well forming on the stone.

I take pictures with a special camera. Its a Mirrorless DSLR that has been modified by Life Pixel to see light in other wavelengths. This allows my camera to see light in the Infrared [IR] around 1300 NM wavelength, through the visual spectrum and into the Ultraviolet A and B wavelengths roughly into the 300 NM wavelength.

I carry many filters on me to make the photos you see in my blog, these filters screw on my lens and help me isolate certain wavelengths for certain scenes. These filters can be IR / UV pass-through filters to assist me get a natural photo taking out the UV and IR light. Or I may use a Infrared pass-through filter capture just IR light. I can do the same with UV light as well, though I need some better filters which they can cost a few hundred dollars for true Ultraviolet pass through filters. So for right now I have B + W 403 bandpass filters that still allow some IR light in, due to their cheaper material.

There are also exotic glasses made of sapphire and germanium I am open to working with to replace my silica glass hot mirror with a material that allows even longer wavelengths of infrared to enter my cameras sensor. Special sensors, lenses and filters of that material would be needed as well, so it would be a big project but one that may give some even more unique photography results.

One can really find solace when exploring those old forest roads. The best job I ever had was working for the forest service. When your office is in a stand of ponderosa pines in a national forest you can be really lucky! I have spent a lot of my time out in the woods the past few weeks and you definitely fee a little better about the world. I really love your first picture I am always captivated by to perspective shots.

@balticbadger you sure can. I bet you got to see alot and hear alot working there. I personally love the smell in the morning when the sun starts hitting the trees and bringing that sap smell out.

Thanks much,glad you like them.

Those are beautiful! I always love the little bits of blue sky peeking through.

@goat-girlz I look forward to the sky peaking through in my UV photos as well. The infrared in the 720 nm range also looks cool peaking through as it's a yellow orange color. Thanks much

Nice pathway beside the forest and nature looks fresh and cool.

@kamrunnahar it was quite fresh. Loved the smells and sights there. Thanks alot
