The Uiseondang, Shrine for The Monk Whose Name Is Young-gyusteemCreated with Sketch.

in #photography5 years ago

The most historical place in the Boseoksa is the Uiseondang.
There are portraits of Young-gyu and Jogu in the Uiseondang. Young-gyu commanded the monk army during the war with Japan, and Jogu founded the Boseoksa for the first time.
There were the portraits of the monks who commanded the monk army, but most of the portraits were stolen. Now, only the portraits of Young-gyu and Jogu remain.

Jogu was depicted as a mild character in the painting.

On the contrary, the portrait of Young-gyu emphasized his strong character.
The eyebrows soared upward, and the eyes were big. I could imagine that Young-gyu was a strong general when I looked at his face.

Uiseindang is a small building.
Young-gyu practiced martial arts in the Boseoksa while living as a monk.

When the war with Japan occurred, He gathered a monk to fight against the enemy.
The battle happened near the Boseoksa.
At that time, Joseon’s troops were defeated, and all ran away.
Only the commoners remained to continue the war with Japan.

The scholar Cho Joon and Young-gyu fought against Japan and died all during the battle.
At that time, 700 people fought against the enemy, but none of them survived.
Later, people gathered those 700 bodies to make a tomb.

The inside of the Uiseondang was very simple. There was a memorial tablet for the people who sacrifice their lives for the country.

The painting in the building is different from that of other temples.
This is a picture of a monk practicing with a sword.
That monk seems to be a Young-guy.

I feel sorry that I did not take more pictures of the Uiseondang.
There was a picture of martial arts, but I just came home without taking a picture of it.
It might be the most meaningful painting in the Boseoksa.
There are always somethings that I regret when I come home.
Perhaps, the Buddha wants me to revisit the temple.

Awesome post, Steem On

Keep up the great posts, good always wins.

Thank you very much for this story. This event, although more recent, resembles those of the three hundred Spartans, with the difference that the latter were not warriors but monks. Courage does not distinguish trade or profession.

Wow! I've never thought of the resemblance between the monk army and 300 Spartans. Quite interesting!!

You are right the two characters Young-gyu and Jogu are differently presented, as a warrior Young-gyu has that expression on his face strong and decision maker.

On other hand Jogu has soft features, gentle and kind.

it is a sad story of defeat, but war is war, there are loses on both side, but the memory about that war and warriors still in the heart of the nations and still lives in the the Boseoksa.

There is a monument for those monks who sacrificed their lives in the Boseoksa. Those monument and paintings help me to remind the history!

@slowwalker, such a amazing portrait in uiseondang. These are very close to 3D once. Jogu portrait normal but young-gyu different portrait with eyebrows. Also amazing history behind young-gyu. He was great martial fighter. Yeah... Those paintings various once than other Temple's.
