The Stone Lantern in front of Mu Ryang Su Jeon Hall in Bu Seok Sa temple, Korea

in #photography6 years ago

I’d like to introduce you the stone lantern seemed to be built in Shilla Kindgom in front of Mu Ryan Su Jeon which was dedicated to Vairocana Buddha and was believed to be built in Goryeo kingdom.
In this way, Shilla and Goryeo dynasty were reconciled in this temple through Buddhist Architecture and Art.

As I mentioned in previous post, there was no pagodas in front of Mu Ryang Su Jeon. Two pagodas were located in the entrance area far from the main hall. It was an unusual style of deployment in Buddhist architecture.

So in my view, the meaning of the stone lantern might be very important in this Mu Ryang Su Jeon Hall.
That’s the reason why I though the stone lantern very importnat.
I examined this lantern carefully. This lantern was as same as that of other Shilla dynasty.

There were 4 carved Buddhas. An I found out one Buddha leaning his head slightly.
It was awesome. The mason who made this lantern did unusual things.
With this small deviation, the lantern suddenly changed from the ordinary stone things to the great art in my view. The mason seemed to give the lantern to ordinary people from Buddha.
It is my secret.

I recommend anyone who visit Bu Seok Sa to look into the carved figures.

Sort:

beautiful sculpture, in antiquity they created quite good designs

herzlichen dank für dieses außergewöhnliche kunstwerk
ich finde das sehr toll!!!

Interesting ppos, as always

So beautiful and this lantern style and motif is so popular in Garden statuary that reproductions are made in concrete and can be found at almost all garden centres so it is cool to see the 'real thing' indeed!

You always find interesting objects to observe, @slowwalker

Another person may not have noticed such a detail
as the tilt of the head, and you are very observant!

Thank you for the photos, very old lanterns and
amazing architecture of the temple.

@slowwalker, You found more knowledge of Buddhism culture i Korea. I got already big knowledge form your blogs. I take some times for find what's differences include stone lantern of Mu Ryang Su Jeon Hall in Bu Seok Sa temple and previous once stone lanterns. Yep your view correct I trust. Same looks Shilla Dynasty built up lanterns styles.

In this way, Shilla and Goryeo dynasty were reconciled in this temple through Buddhist Architecture and Art.

Yep..Both dynasties gave huge support for made own Buddhism architectural style to Korea. Current generation learn and believe their amazing technology. Very closely seemed carved 4 buddhas. I'm also think Bu Seok Sa temple is brilliant location for visit.

Thank you for this detailed description of the stone lantern in front of Mu Ryang Su Jeon Hall. You are right one of the Buddha has different position of his head. That reminded me the stories of Dan Brown like "Da Vinci Code" where the characters were searching for the decoding the secret that might been hidden in the works of Da Vinci. So who knows that particular sign might be left by old mason as a hint for something that we currently do not know. It is like these conspiracy theorist who probably will find it interesting.

I noticed some coins at the foot of the lantern, that might be a tradition, like a wish well in Europe :)
