The fast-growing liana, in the nature reaches 20-30 m. Young escapes reddish, then dark green. It grows, rising on smooth surfaces with antennae with five to eight ramifications, ending with a sticky pad (suction cup) of 5 mm.
Fingertips of five leaves, less often of three (more often in young shoots) leaflets. Leaflets petiolate ovate, attached to one central petiole. The tip of the leaflet is pointed, the edges are serrate. Leaves above green, dull; bottom - bluish-green, pubescent. In the fall, they acquire a bright red, purple color on the sunny side and light yellow in the shade.
Small greenish flowers are collected in the apical inflorescences - strongly branched panicles with a clear central axis, on which there are from 80 to 150 flowers. Flowering in late spring.
Dark blue, almost black fruits with a diameter of 5-7 mm ripen in late summer or early autumn. The berries contain oxalic acid, inedible for humans, but are food for birds in winter.
