Aesthetics & Functionality – Finding a Bridge
There is a temptation to think of art, beauty & aesthetics as being on one end of a spectrum, and functionality as being on the other.
At times that may be true, but it isn't always the case. Yesterday I posted about a pedestrian bridge that I personally find aesthetically pleasing. It's also in harmony with its surroundings, yet thoroughly functional.
The bridge below checks all the same boxes, and it also has withstood the test of time. Today we are in a town called Laufen (the German word for running) which is directly on Bavaria's Eastern border to Austria, a short drive North of Salzburg.

Man neigt dazu, Kunst, Schönheit und Ästhetik auf einem Ende eines Spektrums zu sehen, und Funktionalität auf dem anderen Ende.
Das mag manchmal stimmen, ist aber nicht immer der Fall. Gestern habe ich über eine Fußgängerbrücke berichtet, die ich persönlich ästhetisch finde. Sie ist auch völlig im Einklang mit ihrer Umgebung und durchaus funktionell. Die Brücke oben ist das auch, und hat sich seit mehr als einem Jahrhundert bewährt.
Heute sind wir in einer Stadt namens Laufen, die direkt an der bayrischen Grenze zu Österreich liegt, nicht weit von Salzburg.

There has been a bridge near here since at least the 1278. Because of severe floods there have been numerous bridges over time. This bridge was completed in 1903 about a half km North of the previous location of the town of Oberndorf. After severe flooding surpassed previous flood records by three meters in 1899, the town was moved to the location of the new bridge.
Seit mindestens 1278 gibt es eine Brücke in dieser Gegend. Wegen schweren Überschwemmungen gab es im Laufe der Zeit zahlreiche Brücken.
Diese Brücke wurde 1903 etwa einen halben Kilometer nördlich des bisherigen Standortes der Stadt Oberndorf fertig gestellt. Nach schweren Überschwemmungen wurden 1899 die früheren Hochwasserrekorde um etwa drei Meter überschritten. Die Stadt wurde daraufhin an den Ort der neuen Brücke verlegt.
On May 1, 1945 just a few days before the end of WWII, a young SS 1st Lieutenant placed explosives on the bridge in order to destroy it, but thankfully a group of brave locals from Germany and Austria defused them before the US Army arrived.
Nur wenige Tage bevor US Truppen Laufen erreichten, bereitete ein SS-Oberleutnant die Sprengung der Brücke vor. Glücklicherweise haben mutige Einheimische das verhindert. 
If you are ever in the area, Laufen is a charming little town.
Falls du in der nähe bist, Laufen ist ein charmanter Ort und sehr sehenswert.
To the West just outside of town there is a lovely lake. 
Westlich von Laufen ist ein sehr schöner See.
