Cave 2 & 3 - Ajanta Caves: The symbol of epic Buddhism artwork

Ajanta Caves are in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. There is about 30 Rock cut Buddhism Monuments. The art in the Caves concept of painting and rock cut sculptures. It is assumed that this Buddhism art has a big impact on Indian culture. that's why these Caves are important to Indian culture.

Cave #2

This cave is just next to Cave 1 and is known for the paintings that have been preserved on its walls, ceilings, and pillars. It looks similar to Cave 1 and is in a better state of preservation. Paintings in case #2 is the feminine focus, intricate rock carvings.

As per ASI, the artwork in the Cave 2 was started in the 460s, but mostly carved between 475 and 477 CE and influenced by a woman closely related to Emperor Harisena.

Major carvings include that of goddess Hariti, a Buddhist deity, the demoness of smallpox and a child eater and the Buddha converted into a guardian goddess of fertility.

The paintings on the ceilings depict the Jataka tales that are stories of the Buddha's life in former existences as Bodhisattva.

These kinds of paintings appear on almost every surface of the cave except for the floor. At many places, these paintings are eroded by the time and human interferences. So, now, no one is allowed to go near to these paintings and touch these.

It also has a sanctum house of Lord Buddha in preaching posture.

Cave #3

This is an incomplete cave. Only an upstair verandah exists in this Cave and therefore is closed.

Please take care of following while visiting these Caves:

  • You can do still photography, not videography until you have taken the permission.
  • Camera flash is not allowed while taking the photographs.
  • No camera stand or other fancy instrument allowed.
  • No eatables allowed ( to maintain cleanliness)
  • Carry a water bottle as there are no stores nearby actual caves. You will require to come down to take it.
