For me compassion is rooted in the understanding that everyone is where they are from what has come before and everyone is doing the best they can given the circumstances that have come before; so I define compassion by what it is not ... what it is not is condemnation and negative judgement; from there it can flow into kindness and the intent to lessen the suffering of others.
