The Scarlet Ibis

This bird is called a scarlet Ibis. They tend to live near water such as swamps, mudflats or small islands where they can keep their young safe from predators. They build their nests high up in trees and nest and roost in large groups. The interesting colouring called "scarlet" apparently is caused by the food they each which is mainly shrimp and other similar shellfish. They are commonly found in South America, but can also be found in other parts of the world. So here is a photo I took of one of these beautiful specimens not too long ago!
