Travel Norway #2 - Storfossen and Metifossen waterfalls

in #photography6 years ago

Hello there! Today in my norwegian photo guide - two waterfalls which I like to visit from time to time: Metifossen and Storfossen on river Homla near Hommelvik, middle Norway.

Both of them are very close each other and can be seen and very well photographed together.

In fact there are totally three waterfalls in close distant of each other - the biggest Storfossen, down the river Homla smaller Mettifossen and around 200 m from them - also very big but not so well exposed Dølanfossen.

River Homla flows here really fast, surrounded by forests and steep hills, most of the shore line of the river is hard to access but there are few nice spots where we can go close the water level and have a good view on the falls and water flowing between the big rocks.

The bigger - Storfossen (Big waterfall) has about 35 meters and is the most accessible and most visited.

After heavy rains it is really impressive when we go down the narrow path and stand in the bottom, experiencing waves of mist and wind from the fall. But in the same time it is almost impossible to take any clean photo from close distance.

During winter time we can expect real magical views when all the water sprinked from the fall is freezing on surrounding rocks and vegetation creating views from other planet. Waterfall itself also can freeze almost in whole size.

During summer time is a great destination for hiking travels and short walks - from the car parking slot is around 1 km walk in the beautiful and mistery forests. Fits perfect even for kids or older persons. Not recommended for baby trolleys ;).

Mettifossen - smaller falls, located between the other two. Easy to access from the turist path, with nice viewing spot with wooden bench.

From the other side we can catch the nice view on Mettifossen together with Storfossen. Looks interesting also during winter-time.

Oh lovely pictures...u are great

Thank You! Stay tuned as more and more posts are on the way!! :D

Woa, the water must be cold even for Johnny Wild! Fascinating scenery, it looks like some kind of magical fantasy world, very cool!

Thanks for sharing

Johnny Wild don't feel cold - seriously! He just finished his over 5000km walk through whole scandinavian penninsula - spend half of the year during winter time in far north... he is superhuman for me! I am going to invite him here to Steemit - he is a great blogger. Thanks for comment!

wow... we don't have frozen waterfalls here. This is great.
@yidneth... Let's do something to make it real to visit Norway in 2018 hehe

Hi! Here frozen falls are more common now than flowing ones ;) . Just come with visit, we can organize some photo workshops together! I know many good destinations to travel!

I wish I could, thank you! I don't know what happens... various sources in life are pointing to Norway lately :)

Awesome post...it's interesting to have the summer and winter shot of the same location side by side ;)

I like this as well! It is good subject for one of my next posts! I think I have quite many examples how the seasons are changing the same location. Thanks for comment!

Wow, those pictures with the waterfall frozen! Totally stunning. Awesome pictures as always!

Great thanks! Freezing waterfalls looks the best, when they are frozen already- they are not so scenic as when we can see mixture of ice and flowing water.

The frozen waterfalls are surreal ❤️

Totally agree ;). Thank You!

Wow, truly amazing photos! You got some serious photo skills :) Nice work!

Thank You! I am trying to choose the best shots from my collection, and after 5 years in Norway - my collection is quite huge :). Stay tuned! ;)

Yeah, lots of great motives to shoot here in Norway :)

Unbelievable that so much water can still freeze. Must be pretty cold.

Hi, it is quite strange but frost like -5 for few weeks and the waterfall is under ice. It goes from a side and moving towards middle of the waterfall, the same as on the rivers. Also during cold winter time, there is not so much water flowing as in other seasons, all water is holded in snow and ice, sometimes the river is freezing in the upper part and the falls getting smaller and smaller until they can freeze completely. It is long term process but finally, after few months of winter, everything is frozen ;).
