Whale Watching at Hermanus, South Africa!

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

Look! The baby whale is practicing how to breach!

The gentle giant Southern Humpback whales brought their babies into the bay today and we were there to watch! From June to November every year is the time that the whales arrive and an annual Whale Festival is held in the seaside town of Hermanus during September. People come from all over the world to come and watch, as the whales arrive with their young.
Let's have a look!

An excited crowd was watching from a popular spot, as I hear that at times the whales would almost touch the rocks when they pass by!

Here one of the youngsters stuck his head out of the water!

Wow! Look at the size of this youngster's blow hole!
The rock like lump on his skin is Barnacles! A quote here; "One Hunchback whale can host almost a thousand pounds of barnacles, but relative to a hunchback's nearly eighty thousand pounds of weight, it's the same as wearing summer clothes for a human"

Here two adult whales are passing by the rock and the front one's baby is right next the her!

Can you see her baby next to her?

Practicing, as they say that practice makes perfect and one of these days the youngsters will be able to breach right out of the water!

This was indeed a wonderful experience and I am so thankful for the super zoom on my Canon, as we weren't swallowed up in the crowds and I could find an isolated spot. So isolated that we encountered a stream of disturbed Cormorants leaving their favorite spot and flying right past us over the ocean. There were hundreds of them in flight and I managed to get some great shots. But that's for another post.

We hope you have enjoyed the pictures and thank you for visiting a post by @papilloncharity

@papilloncharity 😱 you had the privilege to see a baby whale.... 😍 I envy you a little bit, but my time will come too. Enjoy the rest of the weekend ✌️
Greetings from Graz, Austria

@marjanko thank you my friend! Today we saw six baby whales, but only two tried to breach. I got both. One in the first photo and the other one in the last photo. You have to come and see this one day. It's unbelievable. Blessings from Elgin, South Africa Btw. I will DM you!

That is so nice, that we made contact 🤗

Wow, it must be pretty amazing to have been there and be in a position to watch the whales so closely. Great photographs, by the way.

@machv Thank you and it was indeed an experience of a lifetime. The Mothers are extremely big and to see them "roll" in the water is simply fantastic. The babies of course is a story on its own! Blessings!

What an amazing photography you shared. The Blue Whale is the largest animal ever to have lived on earth. Thanks for sharing,

@hamzayousaf indeed my friend and thank you for the wise comment! Blessings!

Wow that must have been so special @papilloncharity! Lovely photos!

@lizelle, Thank you Lady Lizelle and it was indeed a special occasion. We chose to go today, as the Whale Festival is over and we thought the crowds would be gone. At the festival there were thousands of people and even today there were some crowds. But thankfully I managed to get some shots in! Blessings!

Wonderful shots and so cool you got to see Whal Watching, I experienced that a couple of times maybe 35 years ago and loved it

@tattoodjay It is certainly a great experience especially also with their babies Sir JJ. Blessings!

Ohh yes that made it even more special I bet

I have never seen a whale! You are so lucky. Fantastic photos

@melinda010100 Great to hear from you Lady Melinda and trust that all is well with you? God is good and we are extremely grateful that he brought about this change in our lives. No more big city for me, until the end of my days! Blessings!

All is well here, the only thing that I could even hope was different is that there would be a little more sunshine. We have had so much rain. It seems like everyday is another thunderstorm and complete cloud cover. The river is in flood stage and it is just plain soggy here. If this precipitation pattern remains the same as winter arrives, we are going to be up past their eyeballs in snow.

I am so glad everything is going so well for you. I love hearing how happy you are!

@melinda010100 Wow! We feel for you Lady Melinda. As we arrived in a very wet winter here, all that I can say is that you have no choice but to sit it out! Great hope is that it will not last forever. Blessings and prayers for you!

Nice photographs friend..
Nice to meet you after Break. Thanks friend...

@tussar11 Great to also see you again my friend!

Very exciting to be treated to such a spectacular show moving down the coast. We last saw them in Port Edward going towards the Cape waters, too far out for my camera unfortunately.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful photography on the whales Stephen.

@joanstewart Apparently they hang around here in Walkers Bay where Hermanus is situated for about 4-5 months and I am told that the bay is ideal for the babies to "find their feet" before moving on. It was a great experience to see the little ones trying their luck Lady Joan. Blessings and all strength with your visitors!
