STREET ART PhotoGraphy - Brick Lane East London (Photo Essay)

Street Art

As part of a new series of street art photography from East London here is a second set of images with accompanying thoughts. This time the themes become darker, more serious with a taste of horror in certain corners of dark wall space. Spraychild zombie-esque prints sit alongside hybrid incarnations of cartoon characters by pysco and Basquiat influenced characters painted in a wild scrawling style.

Layers

There are many layers of work to be discovered with poster art replaced over the top of existing work and torn corners revealing snippets of previous exhibitions. In certain parts of the walls, stickers and work sensitively sit along side each other in a neatly arranged natural order. In other more exposed positions, work competes for the viewers attention by aggressive placement over existing work.

Escalation of Stakes

It's an arms race of weird and wonderful with more and more surreal and horrifying imagery reflecting the increasing competition to be noticed but also of a dark undercurrent lurking in the subterranean avenues of UK subculture. Alienation is a common theme as are more traditional pastiche of pop iconography from Doctor Spock to Tom & Jerry.

Collaged Walls

The walls themselves become interesting as the spaces between the art and the previous layers begin to create it's own syntax of grime and colour, spray and sticker. The walls begin to resemble the work of artists Jacques Villeglé who working in the 1940's began to recreate ripped & torn posters as originals. I have long been interested in the results of this form of natural abstraction which creates a new world in negative space.

Never been to London, but it is interesting to see "darker" images, is the area more inner city, lower income?

Thanks @michielano it's inner city.. next to the City of London. It's a mixed area of very rich and quite poor. It's very fashionable in a way and has been a centre of art and media for a long time. In Shakespearean days it was the original twilight zone, just outside the city walls, where pickpockets, thieves and murderers, prostitutes, con-men and other assorted charlatans lived. Apparently it was very dangerous if you didn't know the area. It's also where Jack the Ripper carried out his grisly murders !

Awesoem selection of art, the Evil Mickey Mouse one really caught my eye

thanks @tattoodjay, there's a whole load more to come. lots of dark and political satire. the mickey one is really disturbing isn't it ! nightmare territory !

Ohh yes it could well lead to nightmares looking forward to seeing more :)

Another nice graffiti gallery @outerground. Oh, BTW, Mr. Spock is not Dr. Spock ;) Upvoted, resteemed & DPS.

He will always be Dr Spock to me ! :) Thank @photo-trail there's some great new work and a few classic stencils around Brick Lane at the moment. I'll post some more later this week !

I'm off to a vacation @outerground. I won't have stable network until the end of September. So, there will be a pause in the Daily Photo Selection. Good luck!

Have a gReaT time on vacation and enjoy having a rest from the hard work of DPS... I will miss it but you will come back energised !! :) thanks for letting me know

Now i know where that love for street art comes. Have been to Brick Lane while visiting London. Shot some nice street art and graffiti there. You can smell spray paint when walking those streets there :)

I live among the outdoor galleries and it is indeed infectious.. Every time I turn a corner there's something new, often epic and by very talented artists. It's a great place to document. Around Brick Lane, every doorway, nook & cranny is filled with a piece of art and it changes all the time.. part 3 coming up
