Two versions, same species
Last Friday, I saw this butterfly. It wasn't immediately obvious what it was, I was hoping it was a white admiral, and it looked like one from a distance:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f7.1, 1/125s
Its markings looked similar to those of the white admiral, but it turned out to be the summer form of a map (Araschnia levana), landkaartje in Dutch.
This species of butterfly has two annual broods that look very different. The spring edition looks like this:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f5.6, 1/160s
These two versions look completely different, yet they are the same species. Strange but true.
Thanks for watching!
Great post
I wonder if color is formed depending on temperature or the food, consumed by the caterpillar? Fascinating!
Possibly temperature during metamorphosis? It would be interesting to test it in a laboratory environment :)
Bug torturer! :)
The wee buggies would be kept happy and safe
I don't know, but something switches on a different set of genes to get a completely different pattern.
What a nice butterfly....upvotee and resteemm..
That is unbelievable! Nature is a beautiful thing! It reminds me of the lizards that change their shade based on their environment!
These are some great shots per usual!
Thank you.
The two forns are so different. Really fascinating. Great photos too.
Thanks.
Strange. Nature is full of surprises.
Indeed. Confusing at times.
Butterflies are very beautiful,
butterflies are balloons of nature to decorate this world :)
Amazing how they look so different. Thanks for sharing.
