A very rare butterfly

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

At least, it is rare in The Netherlands. Presenting: the white admiral (Limenitis camilla), kleine ijsvogelvlinder in Dutch.

These butterflies feed mostly on blackberry flowers, and lay eggs exclusively on honeysuckle.

This is the first photo I ever managed to get of one, taken yesterday:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f5.6, 1/250s

It is in the same family as the equally rare purple emperor (Apatura iris), grote weerschijnvlinder in Dutch:

Olympus XZ-1, 112mm, ISO100, f8, 1/125s

The two are often confused, also because the blue sheen of the purple emperor only shows up under certain angles; from other angles, it looks brown.

Another identification pitfall: the summer form of the map (Araschnia levana), landkaartje in Dutch, also looks similar to the white admiral.

Thanks for watching!

Congrats on your first capture of the Limenitis c. Must feel nice. Seems Apatura might assuage some future shade of blue dilemmas as well.

Indeed. But how often can I use this photo before people notice?

Seems to me at LEAST four. You are such a wiz at Photoshop...you can reverse him 2x, then upside down on an added substrate, such as a twig, garage door, grill of the Saab, etc. I think it might actually be fun to put him all OVER the place, and see how long it takes before folks notice. You can always tell them it was Piglet, keyboarding late at night, if you get in trouble.

Very interesting! :)
They are beautiful!

Thank you.

very nice...photo.

Nice photos! Great work :)

Beatiful butterfly

These are gorgeous specimens! Looks like the orange markings near the bottom of the wing close to the abdomen might be another identifying marker? They look more distinct and circular on the purple emperor =)

True, that. I can easily distinguish the two from photos, but in flight or from a distance, it's hard.

Both are gorgeous ! Thanks for showing us the beauty in nature.

My pleasure.

beautiful photo my friend, i like it

Thank you.
