Summer flowers revisited

in #photography9 years ago (edited)

As promised (to @englishtchrivy), some more photos of flowers, to get us in a more summery mood. These flowers all grow in the local peat bog near Enschede, The Netherlands.

This one is called bittersweet (Solanum dulcamara), it is often found in or near marshes. I'm not sure how they determined that the taste is first bitter, then sweet, because most of the plant is poisonous. The flowers are odd, but nice:

I don't know what this one is called. It struck me because it looks like there is a little flower growing in the middle of it. This, by the way, is also the one I posted as ASCII-art yesterday during the Great Images Blackout:

Another poisonous one: foxglove (Digitalis purpurea). This one is more white than the Latin name suggests:

Another one I haven't been able to find a name for:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 42mm, ISO100, f4, 1/200s

This one is called rosebay willowherb (Chamaenerion angustifolium), or fireweed in the USA. It was a bit out of its usual habitat, and I've only seen it in one year:

I had never realised that round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), or any sundew, could grow flowers until I saw them. Here's proof 8-). The flower stems can grow very tall, I couldn't get both the flowers and the rest of the plant in focus:

This modest but pretty flower is quite rare, it is called a marsh violet (Viola palustris). You only find them in or near marshes and peat bogs:

And finally, an invasive species. It's called policeman's helmet (Impatiens glandulifera) and many other names. It's a shame it is invasive and pushes out the related native species. The flowers are pretty though, and much loved by bees:

I hope to see them all again this year; for now, cheer up, spring is here! Far more important and interesting than distribution curves, flag discussions and reward pools.

@ocrdu THANK YOU!
Feeling pumped up already!
I love the Sundew!

I got foxgloves at home ^ ^
The aphids love them but because of that the lady bugs come around ^ ^

Nice shot! Lying on the ground, were you?

@ocrdu thank you!
how did you know? hahaha yes, I was flat on my stomach to get this one hahahaha

Beautiful collection of flowers!

Thank you!
