Last ice melting

in #photography9 years ago (edited)

After a few days without frost in The Netherlands I assumed all the ice would be gone in the peat bog, but then I saw this birch branch in the water, too high up to be floating:

It turned out it was sitting on ice, which was covered with water. Deeper in the peat bog, in sheltered places, there was more melting ice to be seen, slowly revealing what was under it:

It almost looks like quartz with inclusions, and a little mysterious, in the same way. In some places, the grass in the ice made a nice composition:

The peat moss, the little plant that creates much of the peat in peat bogs, had decided it didn't want to wait any longer and had started growing again, pushing the ice aside:

A day later, it felt almost like spring here, with temperatures over 10oC, and that took care of the last remnants of the ice. At least, we still have the pictures 8-).

Ah yes, the winter leaves too soon, doesn't it? Spring has started already, and while the weather may be cold again, we are past the dead of winter. We need to enjoy the ice while we have it!
