Hunter at work

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

While the damselflies were doing their thing a few days ago, this four-spotted chaser (Libellula quadrimaculata) was out hunting.

It may seem to be just sitting around doing nothing much in particular, but it is in fact looking across a pond for prey. It has excellent vision, and when it spots something that looks edible, it will take off, catch it, and return to where it was. If the prey turns out to be less-than-tasty, it will spit it out on the way back.

They usually return to the same perch, sometimes lower or higher up for a fresh perspective. That allowed me to take this second photo, with a darker backgound for added ominosity (is that a word?):

Those are two of the better photos I have of this species; I specially like the first one. Here is a portrait shot of the same species, for completeness:

Thanks for watching!

Great shots! They are so sharp...I love the details on their wings.

Thank you.

I will have to see if ours have 4 spots. Nice work.

When i was a child, i always thought that dragonfly is like a helicopter
🚁🚁🚁

Helicopters are inspired by dragonflies. Someone said to me

Well, most can hover, and some can even fly sideways and backwards, so ...

Excellent photos! It's great when they come perch in front of you!

It is, even when you're standing up to your ankles in mud 8-).

Wow, very nice...i love it...great Job my Friend 🐛

Thank you.
I like this species; they return to the same spot where they came from, making them easier to photograph 8-).

They look so cuddly, with their big eyes ;)
