For want of barbed wire
These common darters like to sit on barbed wire, but it seems blackberry bushes will do too. Maybe they just like pointy bits in general; I haven't found out yet why. Maybe it is for protection, but they don't have many natural enemies here, and the ones they do have don't mind thorns.

Great photos. A huge green dragonfly flew in my house once and I took a few snaps on my phone, they weren't like yours though.
