Flatbellies

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

These dragonflies are called "platbuik" in Dutch, which translates as "flatbelly". The English name is the less flattering broad-bodied chaser (Libellula depressa).

We found them yesterday sitting at the water's edge, as we were:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO125, f5.6, 1/500s

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f8, 1/250s

Those two are males; the females are yellow:

Thanks for watching!

The name Libellula depressa (in italian the word "depressa" means depressed) make me think about a dragonfly who need to feel herself more happy :D (Ps: this flatbellies are really beautiful!)

Heehee. Maybe it needs some antidepressants, but it only eats insects.

In Latin it would mean "pressed inwards", "pushed down", "indented", or "flattened", but I don't know if those meanings survived in Italian.

It's funny :) Usually, the male has more "bright" look. And those are different

Young males are also yellow, but when they get older they get a blue powdery-looking coating. Maybe it's their version of turning gray 8-).

Oh, sometimes adulthood is really gray... :)

Beautiful picture. Congratulation 👍
