Dutch watermills: The Haarmolen (edited repost from 9 months ago)

in #photography7 years ago

I cheated; this watermill sits just across the border in Germany, so it isn't really Dutch, but that will be easily corrected when we invade.

This old watermill is called the Haarmühle, but the Dutch call it Haarmolen.

It was built in 1619 on the spot of an older mill from 1331. Well worth a visit if you are in the neighbourhood of Alstätte, Germany, near the Dutch border.

The mill is still operational, but only started up occasionally for tourists. It is picturesque from all angles, buit it is a pain to get a shot without tourists in the frame.

Here's a photo of the gear box inside this watermill:

It's all wood, mainly oak, and almost all connections are mortise-and-tenon. Some very nice old engineering there.

Thanks for watching!

Looks very neat and beautiful comrades

This is a truly unique mechanical design. Strikingly, the wooden parts are still in working condition. Thanks for the interesting photos.

Nice BW conversion on the gear box :)

Oh the stories that old mill could tell....invade? When I visited the Netherlands to meet my husband's parents I could not mention to my Fatherinlaw that my great grandfather on my mother's side was German. Both my husband's parents were children during WII and my fatherinlaw Hendrik almost starved to death during the German occupation....Hendrik was not allowed to watch football between Germany and the Netherlands for his health .... he might of stroked out he would get so angry!

There's still a lot of hatred in the older genarations, and I can't blame them. My grandfather was in a concentration camp and liberated only just in time by the Russians, and many people in the bigger cities starved when the Germans cut off the food supply in the winter of 1944/1945.

On a lighter note: we are still waiting for the return of all the bicycles the Germans stole 8-).

We get along fine now though, and the invasion bit was just a joke. Or not?

There is another kind of invasion going on perpetrated by globalization and mass migration. It's very painful to watch but a lot of people disagree with me, I feel this isn't good for Europe or the immigrants, that is letting large alien populations move into long established cultures without any kind of order or integration.

My husband makes the joke about stolen bicycles all the time😁

Very interesting and unique...love black and white..beautiful photos 👍🏻😍

Nice shots! I like the motion in the water on the first shot. I take it the windmill is still operational?

This one has had an electrical generator installed in it, and the rest also still works, but it is only started up for demonstrations.

ah that's to bad. I've been to the ones at Zaanse Schans, and they still operate and produce goods.

That old timber looks great in B & W.
Thanks for the heads up regarding the upcoming invasion.

We are only after the bits where the people with the same Saxon dialect live 8-).

Well that seems only fair as long as you don't get greedy and start invading Poland ;-)

Well done! Nice captures.
