Damselflies: Camouflage Brown

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

No bright colour on this one, but it is an interesting one nonetheless: it is one of the few species that overwinters as an adult, and can be found all year round. You sometimes see them covered in ice, but they seem to survive that just fine.

It is called common winter damselfly (Sympecma fusca), bruine winterjuffer in Dutch. The books say they aren't rare, but I don't see them often. Below are two photos taken in early spring, their first active period, when they come out into the open to catch what sunlight they can:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 42mm, ISO160, f8, 1/160s

Olympus Stylus 1s, 42mm, ISO125, f8, 1/125s

This next photo was taken in august, during their second active period of the year:

Olympus XZ-1, 28mm, ISO200, f5.6, 1/125s

As you can tell from the focal lengths, they aren't at all shy or skittish; the main problem is finding them.

Thanks for watching!

I know the nymphs of some species live in the water for a few years but I didn't think the adult damsel or dragon fly over wintered, interesting. :)

I'm still looking out for a photo of one covered in hoar frost, but no luck yet.
