Cars in the wild: a Volvo

in #photography8 years ago (edited)

This Volvo Amazon was standing next to a farm under a roof, so not quite a barn find:

The Volvo Amazon aka the 120 series was built from 1959 to 1970. About 660000 were produced, in two-door, four-door and station-wagon versions. It was the world's first car with three-point seat belts fitted as standard, and it is a safe car in other respects as well.

Volvo Amazons are very tough and, for their era, well protected against rust. The B18 engine you find in many of these cars is bomb-proof; the world's highest mileage car, a Volvo P1800, has run more than 4000000 km (2500000 miles) on its original B18 engine.

The Volvo Amazon is a nice daily driver, as classic cars go, nothing spectacular, but reliable and easy to maintain. The steering is a bit heavy, though. There are many clubs for this car, and parts are easy to get.

The one in the photo has a shield saying "B20"; this refers to the engine. If the shield is original, this car is fitted with the 2.0 liter engine, a larger version of the B18 engine. The B20 engine was introduced in 1969, so this car would then be a late model, known as the P130. The two-carburettor version of the B20 engine yields 118 hp, enough to keep up with modern traffic.
