Butterflies: the Purple Emperor

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

Purple Emperor (Apatura iris)

These big butterflies are quite rare in The Netherlands. They spend almost all of their time high up in trees, but sometimes they come down to look for minerals on the ground:

Somehow, they avoid greenery as a background, but I suppose they are pretty enough even against other backgrounds:

The only way to get a photo of these is to climb a tree, or wait for one to come down. Not one for hasty photographers.

I think I have never seen this beautiful butterfly. Thank you for sharing this awesome images. Did you climb on a tre, too ? I follow you to see more of your works :)

Thanks!
I climb trees to get photos of butterflies and dragonflies sometimes. Hold on with one hand, take a photo with the other 8-).

Awesome :) I like to climb trees too, but I prefere to hold on with both hands :D

Not a bad idea, generally 8-). I'll post a photo that required climbing shortly.

That is a gorgeous butterfly. The 'eyespots' are amazing, or at least that's what I call them. Assume that is what they are supposed to be.
