Butterflies: Ringlet

in #photography8 years ago

The ringlet (Aphantopus hyperantus), koevinkje in Dutch, may not have bright colours, but I think it is a pretty one nonetheless, especially when seen from the side.

This butterfly is one of the few species that also flies in the rain; this is also an inside joke between me and the missus, and I would tell you about it, but then it wouldn't be an inside joke anymore, now would it?

It is a common butterfly in Europe and Asia with a wingspan of about 4cm (1.6"). "They live in grassy, moist or dry forest clearings with bushes but not in open places. There is a strong degree of attachment to woodland edges and blackberry bushes." I'm in full agreement with Wikipedia here.

This first one (also one of my favourite butterfly photos) seems to be jealously guarding its water:

Not the best of photos, but the only one I have of a ringlet with its wings open:

Olympus XZ-1, 112mm, ISO400, f5.6, 1/60s

They are often seen feeding on blackberry flowers:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f5.6, 1/400s

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO125, f5.6, 1/500s

The paint seems to have run a bit on this one; nice effect, though:

Thanks for watching!

Beautiful butterflies. That first photo, wow, just wow! The details are just amazing, and so sharp and nice. Well done! Hope you're having a good weekend :)

Thanks! And you!

Great shots accompanied with a detail and informative explanation. I believe i've seen those in Lithuania too, even though i am not a huge nature expert, and might be some other species. There are quite a few i believe that does not boast bright and vivid colors on their wings.

Thanks. Yes, there are quite a few brown species, often overlooked, but most look really nice if you get closer. I have a few brown ones in the pipeline.

I'll make sure not to miss it, but still i think i will not be able to tell one from the other, majority of them looks so similar to an untrained eye, and there are zillions of species i am sure :)

There are. Here's another brown one, already identified by me So You Don't Have To 8-).
