Butterflies: a leaf among leaves

in #photography9 years ago (edited)

This comma (Polygonia c-album) is well-camouflaged when it is closed:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f8, 1/320s

When everything seems safe, it is time for some sun bathing:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f8, 1/160s

At the slightest movement, it will close it wings again, and disappear as far as most predators are concerned.

Here's a better look at its side, against a different background and in raking light to bring out the details:

Olympus XZ-1, 112mm, ISO100, f5.6, 1/160s

It really looks like a wrinkled brown leaf, except for the white "C", of course. Quite a difference from the other side of the wings:

Thanks for watching!

Wow, that is really amazing cover. I had to look for a few seconds before I even realized that it was not a leaf :)

I saw it land, or I would have missed it too.

@ocrdu the 3rd pic ffff!!!

Took me about 20 minutes to find that first one, And I cheated down to see what it's shape was. Pretty amazing. You sure do find them...
