BRAINSTORMING STEEMIT FEATURE REQUEST/SUGGESTION: ANONYMOUS VOTING and PPV POSTING (And of course Images)

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

They say that necessity is the mother of invention and I’d have to agree, so this suggestion it to fix a problem I have been seeing on NSFW posts and also experiencing myself.

Steemit needs Anonymous Voting because sadly some people are afraid to vote publicly for NSFW content (I’m guessing other political and controversial subjects as well) but they are not afraid to look at it and enjoy it as the view counts on these posts are very often several times higher than votes.

This is not just me that is experiencing this as I have gone around looking at quality NSFW posts (Posts with Original content by the poster, as opposed to stolen porn images taken from Tumblr, where people are trying to profit from other people’s hard work) and on almost anything that has nudity even implied nudes sometimes the view count is much if not several times higher than the vote count.

You will see this over and over again, so it implies that many people habitually look at and enjoy people’s content that they are not willing to support with their votes, even though it costs them nothing. This is really not fair to the creators/posters of this content. If this was just happening to me, well then I could just say, "they don't like my work." But I'm seeing it all over on NSFW content.

Sure there maybe be a few people that genuinely don’t like what they are looking at but I don’t believe it’s that high, when you factor in that there are many posts that are not NSFW that have more votes than views meaning they didn’t even read the post.

So this seems to me to be the same old, same ole story of people that want to look at NSFW/Nudity but don’t want to admit to it or for anyone else to know. Hard to believe this still exists in 2017 when we have Miley Cirus, Instgram Ass Models, and Trump as President, and Caitlyn Jenner is thinking about shooting nudes for a magazine (or so I heard)

Because as it is now, it’s really not fair to the people that put a lot of time, energy into their work, and then not get up voted, especially right now while Steem is at over $2.00 and I’m seeing a lot of posts posts making hundred and thousands of dollars.

Yet I’m also seeing my and other photographers posts that have any nudity in their posts stay at the same or close to the same payout levels, regardless of the time, expense and quality of the production and they are all getting lots of positive comments and votes just not as many as they should be based on views.

I mean really, people don’t think an image from a shoot that took hours and hard work by several people to produce is not worth a vote but a picture of a cup of coffee or ham sandwich or snap shots of a vacation is worthy of a vote… I don’t think that‘s really the case, as I said at the beginning I think they fear someone finding out the voted on something with nudity or that is controversial. And just to be clear I'm not saying a picture of a cup of coffee or ham sandwich or snap shots of a vacation is not worthy of a vote, but so are the images that take a lot of put into them and produce.

So the solution I see is let’s make it easier for them to vote. And for the record I'm not saying a picture of a cup of coffee or ham sandwich or snap shots of a vacation is not worthy of a vote, if they are quality they are also worthy of a vote, this is not about putting anyone else down, it’s about giving everyone what they deserve.

And this is not just about me, this is about all of the people producing NSFW content. If you don’t like the NSFW content, it’s no problem, don’t look at it. I’m not asking anyone to support something they don’t like. But when I see tons of views on Quality Original Content, but a fraction of the votes that just does not seem right or fair to the content creators. So I‘m bringing attention to this issue and hoping that by Steemit implementing one or more of the 3 solutions presented below it will fix this problem.

Possible Solutions/Feature Requests:

  1. Anonymous Voting - A person should have the option to vote anonymously. I would think this could be done though a proxy account of some kind.

  2. PPV Voting - A person would be automatically charged a vote just to see the content. Anonymous should still be a feature on this.

  3. The 3rd Solution for one that I'm testing and others could also and that's having people that like their NSFW content but don't want to vote on it vote on a Non-NSFW post so they can still support the Artist/Content Creator who work they view.

The other reason for Anonymous Voting is needed is that people are getting tracked by everyone and everything these days and many people would like to opt-out of that but without creating a fake profile to use. These is especially true for anything political currently as people are so touchy and crazy right now people attack, unfollow and on friend people on Social Media over the most benign things if they support a different person.

One final note is on the Per Per View Content that would require a vote to see it I think it would allow people to put up even higher quality content or special items. For example maybe download links to ebooks, video clips, premium posts with additional content (it would be nice if this was a perpetual payout also or the post was locked after expiration for downloads, etc.)

So those are my suggestions for how to fix this issue that many Steamians who are producing quality content are experiencing at the moment.

PS: I guess I’m going to have to start posting more Non-NSFW (Tamer than implied nudes) work so I can get a taste of these larger payouts and those of you that like my NSFW but don’t want to vote on them but enjoy my work, can just vote on my Non-NSFW work to support the continuation of my work.

PPS:And I would not feel right if I didn't end the post with a picture... So here are a few of my favorite Non-NSFW images I have posted for those not familiar with my work...

I like the idea of anonymous voting. I mean is not like there is much point in showing who voted the post, when you can only see like 10 votes and the rest are "hidden" under "+ x votes more".

I however don't agree with the PPV.

I think Steemit has a problem where people vote on posts just to curate and don't even bother checking or reading the post out most of the time. I'm guilty of this as well, but for the most part I try to open posts and read them, see what they are about before upvoting. So, If I don't agree with the post, don't like it, or think is lackluster I won't vote it.

Maybe if PPV was only for NSFW (which I'm sure is what you meant). But still...

No PPV would be for anyone and it would be before people known to put put quality content. Maybe by rep score. I mean if the person put out crap no one would do it again so it would be self-policing.

For example: I used to write books I'd post some ebooks if I know I'd get paid well but not for $40 when that's what I used to sell one book for.

Ah, I guess that could work, yes.

It could require certain amount of rep and longevity on the platform.

Maybe make it be optional as well, so the author decides which of his posts will be PPV.

On a side note: Care to list some of those other NSFW photographers/artists? I wouldn't mind adding some more spice to my feed haha.

Besides you, I only know about kiddarko and his girl denvermax.

If PPV was implemented I wouldn't even click the content unless it was something that could make me money. Definitely would not pay for some nudie pics. Upvoting is the fairest way.

Why would it have to make you money? The PPV cost you nothing but a vote so it cost you nothing.

Beautiful ladies foooo shooo ;)

Great post and I have a lot to say, and have some ideas to fix this. But I don't have the time now. "I'll be back".

Anonymous voting sure, if you can figure out a way to make it anonymous, I'm not sure Steem is designed to work that way, there will always be a transaction trail from account to account.
Though I think a bigger problem may be that people are used to getting their NSFW content for free, and there's certainly no shortage of it out there.

PPV - Hell no. I'm not going to vote for something unless I know what I am voting for. If you want to do something like that, post a link accessable via smart contract or sell the link for SBD. For example a book or collection of pictures: you can post a preview, then sell the full text via the Steem Market (I forget the exact name of the site) or Open Bazaar once it supports Steem (it may already via shapeshift).

Getting low payouts for work that took a lot of time and effort is frustrating, believe me I know! I've had posts that took hours make less than $1, and a snap of a plate of sushi posted on a whim make about $4.

Truly anonymous voting is a non-starter on this blockchain, but you might be able to convincingly argue for a feature on steemit.com that would allow special categories of post creators to hide a post's voters.

Honestly, though, it seems possible that you are misinterpreting the reasons for the voting patterns you identify as problematic. Personally, I vote for NSFW content - including yours - only when it appears to add value to this platform. When something does not strike me as a value-add, I do not vote for it. If lots of people also vote like this, maybe some of the content you see as undervalued is really just correctly valued by a bunch of people with slightly different tastes than yours.

Alternatively, you could just learn to take a good picture that doesn't require so much post work. You know, like a REAL photographer. Instead of these heavily photoshopped, blown out images featuring bad lighting. No wonder you have to rely on this to make money off of your pictures. And isn't it cheap to keep using pictures from old shoots and labeling them as steemit originals? Aren't you supposed to be shooting no content all the time? Or are not a lot of people paying bad photographers.
