No space for gardening? Try pot gardening ~~ Beginner Friendly ~~

Is everyone feeling springy yet? I certainly hope so :)

Where you live may still feel a whole lot like winter but if you're lucky, like me, you live in a milder climate. Here in the far South, Spring is in full swing. The birds are singing, the buds are blossoming, and the ground is warming up...and you know what that means?? It's time to get out your shovels and gardening gloves, and start planting some flowers!

So you're in the Spring spirit, but what do you do if you feel like you have no place for a garden? Well, you're in luck, because today I'd like to share with all of you how to make the most of a limited space. Even the tiniest spaces without any room for a flower bed can not stop you from growing beautiful flowers or plants with pot gardening.

What is pot gardening?

Pot gardening or container gardening is the practice of growing plants, including edible plants, exclusively in containers instead of planting them in the ground. (src)

Pot gardening has a huge advantage over traditional gardening, in my opinion, because it requires little space and you get a lot of bang for your buck. Plus, pots or containers are portable. You can move your garden wherever you like, and if you accidentally put a plant in too much sun, guess what? You can move it easily without any disturbance to the plant simply by relocating the container.

My pot garden demonstration

Today, I did a special pot garden demonstration for you. Here's what I planted:

Dianthus

Techno Heat Upright Blue Lobella

Summer Nights Delphinium

And now I have a mini garden on my deck that I can enjoy all Spring and Summer long :) They are beautiful, aren't they?

In case you're new to these varieties, Dianthus blooms in Spring, Summer, and Fall, and this Lobella and Delphinium blooms Spring and Summer. The bees and butterflies love these flowers, and I can't wait to see them paying a visit for nectar. It's going to be a happy spring :)

Perennials for Gardening on the Cheap

Each of these can be grown in full sun and they are perennials, meaning they come back year after year. (Whoo-hoo!) You know what else is great? This only cost me about $20 because I already had the pot and soil. Imagine, one Andrew Jackson and now I have a beautiful flower display for years to come (hopefully).

Quick Tips for Creating Your Own Pot Garden

  1. Pots or containers dry out much faster than flower beds so water frequently.
  2. Dead head old or spent blooms by pinching them off with your fingers. This will ensure more blooms.
  3. Clay pots help keep moisture in.
  4. Fertilize regularly. Not all plants need the same amount of fertilizer so how often will depend on what you're growing. Pots actually need more fertilizing than flower beds because the nutrients are used up faster.
  5. Most plants do best in well-drained soil. But as always, check the individual soil requirements of your plants and amend the soil as needed.
  6. Use plants together that have the same needs for water and sunlight. This may be a no-brainer but this is definitely a rookie mistake.

Get creative with your pots

When it comes to pot gardening you don't even need a true "pot" you just need something that works as a container. Try coffee cans, old painted tires, buckets, baskets, barrels, even boots.
