A longhorn beetle stares down the camera!
I'll be posting more of this beetle later, but I just had to share this shot early, as I thought it was really great!
Such attitude!
You can click on the photo above to see a larger version of it on my 500px profile.
Excellent macro - check out his cool hairstyle! :D
Probably takes forever to get ready to go out on the town!
what challenge?
btw you made him look so damn cute!
had I known he looks like this upclose
I wouldn't have let him out of my strawberry green house
I thought it looked a bit like a bull getting ready to charge.
I'm glad you like it, most people see an insect and say "how gross?!" before even really looking at the thing. The flesh flies though...yeah, they're gross!
I don't think it'd do too much damage to the strawberries...
some are really gross
but I think if we look closer they're actually cute :)
most of them
thanks to you they get noticed
Hahaha! :D He must have a tiny mirror - maybe a drop of water?
Would love to see more.
I'm still processing the pictures. I'll probably post it in a day or two though!
Thank you for your support @strimbello!
Wow, nice Macro...great Job :)
Thank you very much for your support @chrissysworld!
excellent ! like a martian on the prowl it says don't get any closer or I attack.. or does it just think ..that lens is enormous !!
Probably the latter. :P
I picked up a different one later, it's defense was to fall off the stick and pretend to be a rock. To be fair, it really looked like one!
always a good defense.. play dead, most predators want something wriggling & fresh... great photo, one of the best macro shot of an insects face I've seen for ages !
wow really beautiful shot :) awesome work man ;)
Thank you very much!
that's a very cute beetle, you have enlarged this small creature beauty with the power of your camera.
Thank you! It is my goal to give others the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature, particularly the small bits that are often overlooked.
Well, I loved your work.
That one is so furry at it's tiny scale. It does have some attitude! I wonder what kinds of tree it bores into. Borers are so challenging to deal with when they attack trees that we care about -- peach tree borers in individual peach trees at home, or the emerald ash borer in all the ash trees in the eastern US. But they are beautiful animals, especially up close like your image!
Thanks for the great comment! These one's appear to damage Cherry, Fig, and Wisteria among others. They can be quite devastating, the Asian Longhorn (not the one is this post) beetle is a problem in Western Canada.
The Asian Longhorn Beetle is such a problem, for sure. The threat of them moving into eastern Canada and Sugar Maple country will never end, now that they are in North America. Carrying firewood around when people travel to go camping is an easy way to spread them! It's great that you take such nice photos of borers -- it gets people interested in them and what they do. And then learn how to keep from spreading them around.
Indeed, knowledge is a powerful tool! Perhaps the most powerful.
These guys are native here, so there's not much to be worried about, it's when they get into places where they have no natural predators that it becomes a problem.
It's good to know your personable borer is a native one! Knowledge is powerful, alright, but photos like yours spark an interest - and that makes all the difference!
Certainly looks like a mean looking bugger. :-)
They're pretty docile, but it you harass it enough they can bite in self-defense using jaws usually employed to cut through tree bark.
Utterly beautiful macro! He is looking so cute! Great job, capturing him that way.
Thank you so much!
Excellent, good job getting down on his level, very effective technique. Followed & upvoted
Thank you! And thank articulating screens, that made getting the shot much easier!
