Ciao a tutti,

Hello everyone,
I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!

Mottola is a small town in the province of Taranto, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. The village is perched on a hill, at almost 400m high on an upland, a ‘motta’ – which is where the name MOTTOLA derives from. It is located in the heart of the Regional Park of the Terra delle Gravine and it's also known as the spy of the Ionian Sea; the name comes from its strategic geographical position, from which you can see the entire Gulf of Taranto.

Mottola’s hill was inhabitated since Prehistory, as is proved by the discovery of bronze statues dated back the Iron Age.

The Lombards and the Byzantines made their mark on Mottola’s history and the castle dates back to 1063.
During the Middle Age, the first written source went back to the first decades of the XI century, and it refers to the foundation of the “Castellum” in Mottola with a strategic-military function, during the catapan of Basilio Boioannes.

After that, in 1102, it was destroyed by the chancellor Muarcaldo from Taranto. During the Norman, Svevo, Angioino and Aragonese domination periods, the town became a Diocese until 1818, when lost the title for Castellaneta, because of a new agreement between Pio VII and Ferdinando I di Borbone.
In 1653 the feud was sold to Francesco Caracciolo VII, the Martina Franca's duke. The submission lasted up to the 1806, with the new feudal laws.

Mottola, despite its size, is a town rich in monuments and attractions. It has an old town circular center that hangs on the hillside between intricate streets and steep stairs and many churches, which should certainly be more valued. Located on the top is the 13th century Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta was built after the destruction of the city in 1102. Inside you can admire the Baptismal font and three altars dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario, to the Virgin venerated by the Poles and to the Baby Jesus.

Numerous and scattered throughout the region are the so-called Grotte di Dio (Caves of God), small rural monasteries, or more often, real caves dug with bare hands by religious people devoted to the cult. Among these small temples of worship, of particular importance is the Crypt of San Nicola (called the Sistine Chapel of rock civilization, where it remains open in front of the cycle of 24 frescoes dating from the XI to XIV century) and of Santa Margherita.

Among the best examples of military architecture, there are the ancient Greek defensive walls, that probably, dating back to the fourth century BC, represents the most ancient trace of the great history of this city.

Among the archaeological sites to be mentioned is the Villaggio Rupestre di Petruscio, made up of numerous caves, mostly dug with bare hands and connected among each other, plunged in a territory tipical of the Murgia area made of ravines.

Thing to see: The Historic Centre, the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Clock Tower, the Church of Beata Vergine del Carmelo, the Church of Immacolata, the caves of God, the Crypt of San Nicola, the Crypt of Santa Margherita, the ancient Greek defensive walls, the Villaggio Rupestre di Petruscio.

Oh yes! I ate their best thing: grilled “bombette”... a sort of small meatloaves.

Cool....I must try one day :)

Architecture that takes place in or around this time frame is always fascinating to me as your mind is just at a lost at first glance as you wonder how could they have gotten certain angles and spacing done without modern tools it is truly an art form that not a lot of people appreciate yet post just like this help more and more people view something they might not ever see in person
