Ruvo di Puglia è un piccolo borgo della provincia di Bari, nella regione meridionale italiana della Puglia. Fa parte del Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia ed è circondato da uliveti, vigneti e boschi di roverelle.

Il paese di Ruvo di Puglia era già abitato dai Peuceti, tra il V e il III secolo. Fino al 2 ° secolo aC Ruvo è stato celebrato per le sue ceramiche caratteristiche ispirata ai colori nero e rosso della ceramica attica e corinzia. Più di 2000 vasi sono visibili nel Museo Archeologico Nazionale Jatta. Il museo conserva il vaso di Talos, risalente al V secolo aC, dov’è raffigurata l’uccisione del gigante da parte degli Argonauti.

Più tardi divenne una città ricca con la propria moneta e, durante il dominio romano, una stazione importante lungo la Via Traiana.

La città fu fortificata dai Normanni e dagli Svevi, quindi fu costruita una cattedrale tra il XII e il XIII secolo.

L'imperatore Federico II ha avuto il suo ruolo nella costruzione della cattedrale romanica, vero e proprio tesoro del borgo, che affascina con il suo profilo elegante, dal tetto spiovente, e il fantastico rosone a dodici raggi, con l’enigmatica scultura sedente, nella quale s’intravedono le sembianze dell’imperatore.
Nella parte inferiore ci sono tre portali finemente scolpiti sormontati da archi ciechi. All'interno, le navate sono divise da archi che si trovano sotto una galleria decorata da animali scolpiti e figure umane.

Sotto la chiesa si trovano tombe romane con affreschi e mosaici, tra cui l'affresco di donne peucete che ballano. Accanto alla cattedrale c'è un alto campanile quadrato con origini difensive.

La torre dell'orologio, a pianta quadrangolare, fu costruita nel XVII secolo e ristrutturata alla fine del XIX secolo. È coperto da un elegante bugnato liscio, dove spiccano due epigrafi, che celebrano l'imperatore Gordiano III, omaggio all’importanza di Ruvo in epoca romana.
Tra le più antiche di Puglia, la torre rientra nel sistema di torri e torrioni con cui si completò il sistema difensivo di Ruvo di Puglia.

Via Vittorio Veneto è la strada principale del centro storico: da qui partono numerose stradine, impreziosite da palazzi rinascimentali, come Palazzo Spada e Palazzo Jatta, che ospita il Museo Archeologico Nazionale.

Ruvo di Puglia is a small town in the province of Bari, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. It is part of the National park of Alta Murgia and it is surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and woods of downy oak trees.

The town of Ruvo di Puglia was already inhabited by the Peucetii, between the V and III centuries. Until the 2nd century BC Ruvo was celebrated for its distinctive pottery inspired by the black and red colours of Attic and Corinthian pottery. More than 2000 ceramics can be seen in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Jatta. The museum keeps also the important vase of Talos, dating back to the 5th century BC, which represents the Argonauts killing a giant.

Later it became a wealthy town with its own currency and, during the Roman rule, an important station along the Trajan Way.

The town was fortified by the Normans and the Swabian, also a Cathedral was built between the XII and XIII century.

The Imperator Frederik II had his hand in building the fascinating Romanesque cathedral, a real treasure trove in the city, which charms with its elegant form, with a sloping roof and the wonderful 12- rays rose window, on which there is a mysterious figure, probably the Imperator himself.
On the lower section there are three finely carved portals surmounted by blind arches. Inside, the naves are divided by arches that lie beneath a gallery decorated by carved animals and human figures.

Underneath the church are Roman tombs with frescoes and mosaics, including the fresco of Peucetians women dancing. Next to the cathedral is a tall square bell-tower with defensive origins.

The Clock Tower, with quadrangular plan, was built in the 17th century and restructured in the late 19th century. It is covered with an elegant bussage, where two epigraphs stand out, celebrating the Imperator Gordian III, an homage to Ruvo during the Roman time.
The tower, among the oldest ones in Puglia, is part of the system of towers and keeps which used to protect Ruvo di Puglia.

Via Vittorio Veneto is the main road of the historic centre: from here depart a lots of narrow lanes, embellished with Renaissance palaces, such as Palazzo Spada and Palazzo Jatta, which houses the National Archaeological Museum.

Thing to see: The Historic Centre, the Cathedral, the Clock Tower, the National Archaeological Museum, the Melodia Palace (the remains of Ruvo's Castle), the Jatta Palace, the Redentore Church, the Purgatory Church, the Caves of San Cleto.
