Jökulsárlón (Glacier Lagoon) Part 2!

in #photography6 years ago

The lagoon looks like a kind of ice sculpture work made by aliens who might have lived here but it is actually a natural formation from melted glacial water coming from the glacier. Each year, because of the sustained low temperatures, the lagoon is getting bigger as more ice falls from the melting glacier.

A lot of people mention the effects of global warming, and Vatnajökull is one of the most obvious places to recognise this. Even though the Lake itself is becoming larger as a result of the falling ice from the Glacier, it is at the cost of the Glacier becoming smaller and smaller as a result of global warming.

On the plus side, this is one of the things that make Vatnajökull so interesting because it will evolve and look different each time you visit.

As you can see the glacier tongue which comes down into the lake is very close to the sea and in fact, the lagoon itself is connected to the sea. This is helping to melt the ice from the glacier as well.

You can see these large chunks of ice beginning to melt and will eventually drift out into the sea. They will eventually find themselves back on the beach but much smaller from the constant crashing of waves from the Atlantic.

The black sand will eventually get covered in lots of tiny bit's of ice, some as old as a few thousand years making the whole area glisten in the sun like diamonds. This is actually the reason why the beach was nicknamed Diamond Beach.
