Amsterdam’s Red Light District Part 2

in #photography6 years ago

The Red Light District is an intriguing place indeed. Aside from prostitution, there are a number of attractions to visit around the area. This includes a selection of sex museums.

As the name suggests, this is a museum that explores all things erotica and hosts a number of exhibits inside of its 17th century building. As expected there are tonnes of memorable souvenirs to choose from. Dated photographs show how the style of erotica has shifted through the ages. There are a number of naughty spins on things people may have considered innocent, I certainly didn’t expect to see half the things I saw that day. This establishment is aimed more towards a crowd looking for some light fun as opposed to a showcase of serious issues.

For any Beatles fans, the museum holds John Lennon’s sketch book which is filled with ‘interesting’ pictures.

For anyone wanting to explore some a little more seductive and risqué, there are a host of sex shows in the RLD. Moulin Rouge (just like the French establishment) offers on stage adult entertainment. The shows are very popular and are carried out in a professional manner. This isn’t quite a sleaze show one might expect and the audience are a mixed crowd of travellers and locals.

The sex shoe itself is quite a lengthy show and lasts for a few hours. It’s a great way to kill some time in the late evening over drinks. On stage there are quite a few crazy things to be seen, so I would advise being prepared with an open mind to surprises. It isn’t just a show of women either, there are quite a few male strippers for eye candy also. The sex shows themselves are quite intense and it’s an interesting experience in itself. This may not be an attraction for everyone but it certainly satisfies curiosity of the wandering traveller.

There is a lot to see around the RLD and everything is very much openly on display. From outrageous clothing to grinders and bongs for cannabis. If you were after some cheeky fun, Amsterdam probably has it covered. There are a number of etiquettes to follow, while this is a relaxed environment a certain degree of respect is to be shown. Perhaps those feeling stressed and a little aggressive would benefit on embracing one or two things from Amsterdam’s carefree attitude. All in all, the RLD in Amsterdam is not for kids but certainly an adult’s wonderland.
