The Shelf From Hell, Part 3: Firing Our Compadre....Again

Ah the shelf from hell, now finished and no longer an issue, but still a bit of a sore spot in conversation.  At this point we've completely fired our compadre. We've seen him once since, working as a collectivo driver which is a notoriously dangerous position as collectivo drivers commonly end up dead, either on purpose or on accident.  We still haven't finished the dealings with the car we purchased from him, so he's still in our lives to that extent.

These were taken probably the last day he actually worked on the thing.  This was after coming back to beg for his job after being fired.  He made up a sob story I won't bother to share here but long story shot we gave him one last chance.  He was set to show up the next morning early for a long day and we honestly needed his help.  It was just before the interview with Jeff Berwick and we wanted to have our property and house in a better state. 

But he chose to go and try and get government paperwork handled instead of coming to our house when he was supposed to and he never showed up until the next morning, on a day we weren't intending on having him work.  He also didn't have things with him in regards to the car, which was the important thing. 

The shelf looks nice, don't get me wrong.  It didn't need to though because this is for plants.  It's going to get very dirty very quick and will be riddled with bugs before we know it, which is totally fine other than the fact that we spent several thousand pesos having this nice shelf built.  

One of the worst parts was not only was he taking a long time to supposedly do a better job, he wasn't doing a better job.  He himself later admitted he was working slowly.  He showed up the day after he was supposed to and despite us telling him to go home, he refused and so we put him to work.  It seemed like he was making an effort, so we watched to see what would happen.  He was paid for that day and sent home, with a conversation about the following day.  We told him he could take off, that we just needed notice. 

Yet time and time again he just didn't show up or showed up many hours late, offering up all sorts of excuses even getting laid as an excuse.  By the last day he came we were fed up, but we did our best to explain what our issue was.  When he said he felt we were taking advantage of him, we told him to leave.  Since this has happened, we have asked locals about the wages we were paying and they've all come back to say we were paying very well, that there was no reason for the issues we were having.

All in all he's just a young kid who thinks he's got it all figured out.  I know what that's like, I've been there myself.  Sadly before long life will show him the reality and I hope he handles it better than we're expecting.  Hopefully we get everything resolved with the car, the volkswagon we're purchasing through him that we intend to convert to electric, only time will tell.

One thing's for certain, he's stuck in the employee mindset and those in the employee mindset will never truly succeed, I know, I've been there.

Too focused on the unimportant things and not paying enough attention to the things that do matter, good luck compadre.
