But before we get to the monastery, we still have to pass some of the beautiful landscapes in the municipality of Rožaje…

Two hours after crossing the border, we can have a refreshment in the Tara river, near Kolašin. We’ll be back here in return.

Morača monastery

Another monument to the Nemanjic Dynasty on our route, from XIII Century. Before the age of Nemanjic, churches were made very small — 3 to 6 meters long and 2 to 4 meters wide. After uniting Serbian lands into one, powerful empire under Stephen Nemanja, we can see greater churches and monasteries. We are coming to one such place…

Fujifilm X-T20, Canon EFs 18–135mm, f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, @64mm, ISO200, 1/1500 sec, f5

It was founded in 1252 by Stefan Vukanović, son of Vukan and grandson of Stephen Nemanja. It was built by the likes of the earlier monarchical foundations: Studenica, Žiča and Mileševa. The founding history is engraved above the western portal.

The Church inside the monastery complex is devoted to the Assumption of Holy Mother of God. Its length is 22.70 meters, it is 6.36 meters wide and its height to the cross on the dome about 23 meters.

Monastery mansion is, as usual, very well maintained.

Inside the monastery complex there is a monument to all those who fell fighting for freedom since 1825.

That is a good reminder to the turbulent history of this region. Monastery was burned by the Ottomans for the first time in 1505, and then, thanks to moderate political climate established by Mehmed Pasha Sokolović, was rebuiled until 1580. But some frescoes were damaged beyond repair… Photographing inside the church was forbidden, so this time no inside photos.

Monastery has to have bells. These are in active use…

Just outside the monastery walls there is a strong well of fresh cold water, very suitable for a favorite sport of some members of our team — Beer Hunting!

But there’s more than meets the eye here. This is not just a creek…

It is also a mini hydroelectric plant that powers ancient monastery.

After the rest in monastery, we are on the road again. And suddenly… We see massive cement pillars that tower above Montenegro’s picturesque Morača river canyon. It’s a Chinese project, state-of-the-art highway through some of the roughest terrain in southern Europe. It’s spectacular design is intended to link the largest Montenegrin port of Bar at the Adriatic coast to landlocked neighbor Serbia…

When it is finished, this bridge will be a part of Bar—Boljare route, and it will greatly facilitate the movement of goods and people to the Montenegro coast. But now we have to use the old road to Podgorica. We have at least three more hours to the seaside…

I am honored, @curie, thank you all from the great Curie community. You’ve made my day great :)

@lighteye. You made an interesting trip in early August. I have to read every part of it. I have heard a lot of good reviews about Montenegro and rest in these places. Amazing photos. You were accompanied by good weather. Very beautiful scenery!

Beautiful place, you can’t miss wherever you point the glass. And there are so many Russians in Montenegro, @madlenfox, that you would feel at home there :)

@lighteye I should probably visit this place. I'd like to see this country.

I love the way those shutters are held open...

You have a hawk’s eye, @angryman ;)

Since the monastery is in the canyon, this is probably a result of strong winds.

Thank you for following this voyage :)

Always keeping the eye on windows - @angryman I bet this could have roots in some of your stories :-)

Perhaps @lighteye would allow me to feature some of his photographs in future stories, as well..?

Of course. Just put “photo by @lighteye” under it, and choose whatever you like :)

Thank you for the permission @lighteye .

You are welcome, @angryman :)

It reminded me @lighteye of the days I spent in Europe many years ago...Mostly in the Alps. A certain sense of warm, familiarity with your photographic region may also be a result of a 'genetic connection' there, on my mother's side

Lepo je to bilo...serijal obećava :-)

А тек у следећем наставку стижемо на море, @hidden84 ;)

Bokte kao Memedovića da gledam :-D

😂😂😂

Congratulations my friend, good work is always rewarded! What a nice place to visit! There are so many nice things here, let me make a list.
It's great to see that this beautiful monastery is well taken care of and preserved. Mosaics are my favorites and this mosaic of Holy Mother of God with a baby Christ is beautiful, not to mention those water focets and the two cups, very original. I'd love a house like the Monastery mansion! It's lovely!
There are so many great photos in your post for my challenge: gates, doors, windows, rust and even a streetlamp :)
Anyways, congratulation again, well done!

Thank you, @erikah, feel free to use photos that you like for your challenge even before I get time to make an entry :)

As always your photos are wonderful! Thanks so much for the tour, it is so beautiful there. Congrats on the @curie vote, too!

Thank you very much, @melinda010100, very glad you like it :)

Oh no! What a shame the picturesque view is going to be ruined by the highway!

Just imagine the view FROM that highway, @livinguktaiwan. :)

Hiya, just swinging by to let you know that this post made the Honorable mentions list in today's Travel Digest #316. Please drop by to check out all the rest of today's great posts and consider upvoting the Travel Digest if you like what we're doing.

Thank you very much, @steemitworldmap, upvoted :)

Hey @lighteye, thank you for sharing such extensive photoalbum, I must say you have very good quality of pictures. It is like almost myself I was there, what I love most the road to Monastery is well maintained so you can reach it easily that sometimes may distract tourist is it is difficult to reach the place. Also the Monastery building itself is still in good condition, I love those water taps on the wall, look like made of brass, also the Icon looks good rrecognizable. The Mason house is so inviting, I love balcony and also natural "fridge", I mean of course cooling the bottles in river is a great idea. Thank you for taking in this little trip,

Cheers, from Art-supporting blog @art-venture
