Rome, Italy - City of Doors & Details (macro photography pt. 2)

There were so many beautiful doors and details that I had to create a part 2! Enjoy! Here is an expanded selection of detail-photographs I took while exploring the city of Rome, Italy...

The "Eternal City" ; Rome is rich with character, color and materiality. It's ancient streets are layered with history. In this series of photographs I collected fragments of details… macro collages of plaster, wood, stone and metal.

"Non Entrare"
I love this old hand painted "do not enter" sign (above) discovered while walking through the Roman Ghetto section of city. The rich color of the paint and graffiti contrast with the grey of the door.

"A Living Language"
Latin inscribed in stone... In this image, I stumbled on a small plant growing out a void embedded in the "R"

"Keyholes"
Many of these ancient doors have dozens of keyholes and multiple locking mechanisms. Who knows which are still working! The abandoned keyholes become part of the pattern of the door and add layers to the stories these doors keep hidden.

"Frame of Wood, Stone & Rot"
I loved the contrast of textures here, where the stone door frame plays against the crumbling wood.

"Collage"
In many of Rome's oldest streets, the walls are composed of layers of marble, plaster, other stone and sometimes wood. Much of the medieval construction re-purposed marble blocks and details from Roman temples.
