The Mighty Desert in All Its Glory

As I was going through my old photos, I found quite a few of them from a trip taken to Eilat in 2007. I've already posted one of them in a previous post, but now I decided to dedicate an entire post to this wonderful place, Timna Park, on the way to Eilat, Israel.

Timna valley natural reserve and park, which many believe is currently endangered due to the construction of a new international airport in its vicinity, was known, as early as the biblical age and perhaps even earlier, as an abundant copper mine. However, it doesn't contain sufficient amounts of copper for modern-age consumption, and so in 1984 the Israeli government decided to stop mining the copper, and turn it into a touristy place instead. And this is really wonderful, because the place contains unique rock formations and types of minerals, and currently there is even one charming (and man-made) lake in the reserve.

This place is truly beautiful, and I very much enjoyed going there. Mind you, two things, though:

1. These photos were taken in 2007, over a decade ago (omg I'm so old), and if you go there and see a different park - don't blame me, it looked exactly like this when I was there last time.
2. If you do decide to go, remember that the desert is hot. These photos were taken on a wonderful day in February, when the weather was only mildly hot. I wouldn't go anywhere near that area between May and October. Just saying.
