In the run-up to the festival, many shops and market stalls will display ready-made Krathongs, or in parts so you can assemble and decorate as you wish. Here are some very qualified and probably many years of experience in making these floating vessels at at work to make the deadlines for the sales.

Assembly and spare parts section if you want to buy that way and make it to your own liking.

Thais have become more creative in their craft and design the krathongs from coconut shells, flowers, baked bread, potato slices, some breaking with the conventional lotus leaf shape in favour of turtles and other sea creatures.
In the past, krathongs were made from natural materials, usually a section from a banana tree trunk, crafted into a lotus shape by using folded banana leaves, and these can still be found for sale around the main festival sites.

Some of there beautiful creations.

Every year, Loy Krathong falls on the night of the twelfth lunar month usually in November, at the end of the rainy season when the full-moon lights up the sky. The sight of thousands of Krathongs, their flickering candles sending a thousand pinpoints of light far into the horizon is a truly magical site. So after all that hard work creating these beautiful Krathongs they all end up in rivers, lakes and ponds all around Thailand.

WHAT is LOY KRATHONG....!!

The history behind the festival is complex, and Thais celebrate for many reasons. The main rice harvest season has ended and it’s time to thank the Water Goddess for a year’s worth of her abundant supply, as well as an apology for polluting the waters. Some believe that this is the time to symbolically ‘float away’ all the anger and grudges you have been holding onto, and including a fingernail or a lock of hair is seen as a way of letting go of the dark side of yourself, to start anew free of negative feelings. If your candle stays alight until your Krathong disappears out of sight, it means a year of good luck.

Young school girl sending hers off early with good wishes and a fresh new year for her.

Hope you enjoyed @marketfriday edition this week sorry bit late but better late then never as they say. Unfortunately this market is only for a couple days every year in November but wanted to bring it and show to you as it's just such a colorful and magical event for the Thai people.

Thank you so much :)

Let me begin by saying that you can be late any day of the week when you post things that are time sensitive!

I love the History and the meaning behind all of these wonderful festivals! I especially love that they carry forward to the next generation a feeling of hope for the upcoming year.

The float themselves are a piece of artwork, with those varied and beautiful ways of putting them together, but, the lotus, How could anyone not love them? I love that you included the vendors in the pictures, it really makes such a difference with adding the human touch in there. Seems like every single piece of real estate had someone selling their share of the Krathongs! Did you get one and push it out to sea? I want to know if you will be having a favorable year! If I lived there, I would have to partake in it! I think I may want to build my own!

The pictures at night were beyond beautiful. There was a definite magical feeling in the atmosphere - and a look of pure joy on the faces as they watched the Krathongs float out of sight. I am not sure they could have fit any more in the water.

Spectacular sight! Thank you so much for giving me this magical post. It was certainly a pleasant surprise to see it today!

Please leave the link to your post on my #MarketFriday comment section so it can easily be found. They will all be in one place!! Thank you!
