Picture Stories #346 - Seeing Rhinos

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

I came across an interesting segment about rhinos on a scientific channel today, and as I watched the TV intently it reminded me about the last time I encountered these majestic beasts live. It was at a zoo in Singapore and I was definitely in awe of these might creatures who also happen to be the 2nd largest mammals on earth. Growing up, I always thought hippos and rhinos were related as they looked quite similar, and presumed one to be the more fiercer sibling and the other to be more gentler. Then I discovered that not only are they not closely related, but hippos are very dangerous too and have quite the temper. Rhinos have interesting qualities - they have good smell but a poor vision, and obviously they have a thick, protective skin. And the one feature that I find the most fascinating about them but unfortunately also makes them a target for poachers is their beautiful horn.

As I noticed during the feeding session at the zoo where the above pictures were taken, these rhinos have quite the appetite. I wish I could have seen a white rhino too, but I was happy seeing this family of rhinos from close quarters!

Thank you for reading!

Usually seeing in adventure movies they like to show how quick such rhinos are when they run. Seeing them in Zoo they look quite domesticated. Luckily they have enough space to move around :)

Yes animals are portrayed very differently in movies :) but usually wild animals are dangerous and we should just let them be peacefully! zoo is not an ideal environment, but at least they are safe...

OMG , those horns look so pointy, they could really mess somebody up! You got to see it from pretty close up, cool photos :)

haha yeah pretty cool and pretty dangerous... thank you :)
