Queens Park, Moonee Ponds - A great place to disconnect

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

On a recent day out at Queens Park, Moonee Ponds I decided to take a few photos to share with the Steemit community and get Queens Park on the Steemit World Map.

Queens Park is one of the largest parks in the City of  Moonee Valley and is a regular destination for families and people wanting to get in touch with nature.

It boasts a huge wildlife lake, with many native and not so native birds calling it home.

The Queens Park entrance is positioned near the huge War Memorial, which is used during local Anzac Day celebrations. And although, not fenced its border is defined but the major roads around it.

There are two children's playgrounds in the park with one being situated near the Queens Park Cafe

And the other is at the opposite end of the park, near the Moonee Ponds Public Pool.

This playground also has a small sensory trail where the little ones can explore more of what mother nature has provided. And the trail starts with some wooden stepping stones to entice them in.

This side of the park also boasts a small jetty that juts into the lake, and was once covered but during recent renovations, the roof was removed. It was great place to sit and disconnect from the world around you, but not so much anymore.

Along the edges of the lake there are a number of shady trees and a small section is devoted to rainforest plants, not regularly seen in Victoria. Perhaps this park was also once the site of the local botanic gardens a very long time ago.

The other main feature of the park is the tribute to the Burke and Wills Expedition, which past through this park in 1860, as they stopped to water the camels and horses before the journey began in earnest.

Nearby I also found an old sundial and was skeptical it would tell the correct time.

I visited the park around 4:30pm so it was clearly out by an hour. But then thought for a moment, and remembered we were on daylight savings time, so it was indeed correct almost to the minute.

However, there is one downside to the park and that is the lack of amenities.

The amenities, unfortunately, are a little scarce, with just these two toilets servicing the entire park. So if you are planning on being there during a popular event you might need to pop on over the road to use the local shopping center facilities if you're caught short.

However, there are plenty of drinking taps and a wishing well if you need to conjure a little luck. There also appears to be regular games of bocce going on the two dedicated bocce tracks.

Overall, Queens Park is well maintained, and I always see people enjoying brisk walks around the lake at lunchtimes, with the playgrounds and cafe busy throughout the day.

So Queens Park, Moonee Ponds, Victoria I'm putting you on the map.

Your Queen's Park is much, much nicer than ours :D

They're just building a new seafront park in Kingscliff and I think Queens Park was one of the proposed names, alongside Parky McParkface. Council has no sense of humour.

Beautiful view of park.....

I haven’t been there yet. It looks like a great spot. The amount of places to visit around Melbourne is quite daunting.

I’ll hopefully be visiting Hanging Rock soon. :)

Might have to add that spot to the world map.
